We are off to Keswick mid September and I have heard that the Lake District can be a bit midgy. Anyone have any experience?
If midges are likely, beside good old Avon Skin so Soft are there recommendations for repellents or plug ins for the van.
TIA

We lived in Cumbria south of Coniston and were not really conscious of midge or mosquito problems at that time of year.
Normally I’d use Deet for personal protection and in the caravan we had a Jungle Formula plug in device that heated up a repellent/killer.
In Scotland Smidge seems popular.

We're on Bowness C&CC site at present and haven't noticed (or been noticed by) any midges.

Deet based repellants are very effective - but it can damage leather in the car if still on the hands!

Usually by September any Lakeland or Loch Midges have departed. Worst months are June July August.
Avon Skin so soft works for us. Enjoy.

Over the years we hove been to the lakes many times, In fact we hope to be in Whithaven visiting relarives in a few week's time. We have never had an excessive midge problem.

Go and enjoy one of the nicest places on the planet.

I was at school for three yrs in Keswick back in the dark ages - midges were only evident in the height of summer.
If you really want midges the west of Scotland is for you.

It's been a good year here on Skye for having very few midges. If it's too hot or a slight breeze they don't come out to play.

Once early in the year as we were just about to set off with the caravan and it was a bright calm morning, they swarmed as I was trying to connect up to the car. Had to resort to the midge hood, long sleeve coat and gloves. Much harder than normal to do.

Sometimes as I dig the ground they'll come out even if there's a breeze and sunshine. A quick retreat is made.

All you need to do is pay for me to come along….

Me, I am target practice for midges!!
A few yrs back I rode up to Applecross on my BMW1200RT with my son - we stopped and got off the bike - he took his crash helmet and jacket off and wandered around…. Midges never went near him…. Me…. Took my crash helmet off and was immediately assaulted by hundreds of the little blighters!

This is a little off topic, but we just spent the afternoon at Newark Park NT. The last time we went there seemed to be a lot of wasps. They are now trying a new way of dealing with them. They have found that it is hot milk that attracts them. The cafe has stopped selling any drink which has heated milk. But the cup of tea was very nice.

They are convinced this is working.

We use dummy wasps nests that hang from a parasol or acer. These seem to be quite an active deterrent as when eating outdoors we haven’t been bothered by wasps.

Interesting. I need to tell the NT. They say they have tried different ways. But they do seem to affect some areas more than others. At home, we rarely see one.

We are here. Needn’t have worried about midges. It hasn’t stopped raining 😀
The Mach 2 fighter jets on low flying manoeuvres about gave me a heart attack though.

Go that bit further east and it’s been cloud and drizzle all day. But yesterday at Chew Green was splendid, and we took our camping stoves but couldn’t set up in our normal spot on the Otterburn Ranges as the Army were firing mortars and GPMG from the interpretation viewing point.

Last week the USAF were contributing F-15 and F-16 whilst the RAF put up F-35, A400M, Chinook, Hawk and T-6. I also saw Jet Provost (Mk4 I think), an L-39 and assorted light aircraft.

Dunno about any of that, one really fast jet looks much like another to me but the first one was so low I could see the pilots name badge 😂
