We are travelling to Lake Garda staying at Camping Tennsee Mittenwald on the way then a small site called Ai Salici near Torre Del Benaco. Has anyone any experience of these sites and tips on sites for the trip through Luxembourg and the A8 to Ulm?.

We are then heading back mid June from the Verona area via Switzerland. My wife dislikes tunnels and has heard that the St Gottard tunnel is pretty claustophobic, or would the San Bernardino be better? The alternative route is the Simplon and Grimsel Passes which I am told can be closed.

Anyone any experiences of any of the above. We are towing a twin axle Bailey Senator with a Range Rover Auto 2.5 Diesel.

Your wife will have problems with St.Gottard tunnel, not only is it long but the fumes do get opressive towards the end. Mont Blanc is a much better tunnel and quite easy to get into Switzerland or the A26 from Italy to Naters. No experience of St. Bernard. Good Luck

hi John

A site we use for just an overnight stop in Luxembourg is Camping Port Schwebsingen. It is ok with a nice bar overlooking the river and serving good food. It is about 2 miles north of the new motorway junction at Perl/Schengen and heading for Remich on the N10 on the east bank of the Moselle.

I do not know the site in Mittenwald, BUT are you aware that for your journey to Innsbruck and Italy there is a very steep drop at Zirl into the valley. Caravans are prohibited on the north bound route. We have taken out 'van down but you will have to watch the 'van brakes, many do overheat!!!!!!.

For your return I can recommend the Simplon pass. It is a steady climb of 13 miles on the Italian side with some narrow bits in places. Down into Brig (Switzerland) is fine. It is a pleasant route. The Grimsel pass I have not done and I think that caravans are prohibited or at least not recommended. If you are heading for the French border then from Brig you follow the Rhone valley and enter France north of Lausanne.

The San Bernadino tunnel we did many years ago. It is not a long tunnel and it is a very picturesque road. We went north to south but I seem to recall that it would have been quite a pull up from the Italian side. It is however a motorway type road.

Hope these points are of use.

Thanks Barry for your very informative tips, I will take the directions for the Luxempourg site. I estimate it will take approx five hours from Calais so will be an ideal stopover.

I hadnt thought about going the Lausanne route but it looks quite an interesting way round.

Thanks again

Hi John

Glad to be able to help.

If you do return via Lausanne, then there is a fine little site for a stop over at Vallorbe, right on the French/Swiss border. The site is in the town and I think you can use the town swimming pool (next to the site) for free. This would make a fair days drive from Garda.

Happy travels BarryB
