Language Lesson

A Linguistic professor in Ontario was discussing the structure of the English Language telling his class:

"In English, a double negative forms a positive. In some languages though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative.

However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative."

To which a Scottish Voice piped up from the back:

"Aye, right."

Jim - I fully understood your posting up to the Scottish connection and then you lost me. When I was employed in FE the students could not understand/comprehend the explanation of two negatives making a positive in either mathematics or English. The standard of education coming through main stream schooling is dropping drasically. There is now a government think tank which has suggested that pupils in comprehensive schools set and mark their own work - I would be an A* dunce if I was now a pupil - the highest grade but knowing sweet Fanny Adams.
