Hi

Can anyone give me any advice please. I need to get a lap top. Its main use will be for when I go away in the van. It needs to be able to take Photoshop CS4 first and foremost and process quickly. I would prefer it if it could connnect to the web etc. I won't be storing many large pics on it as I have an external hard drive.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Lisa,

I have a Sony Vaio. It has 2GB of memory and an 80GB hard drive, Wireless broadband and 3USB and 1 Ethernet connections.

Dvd multi drive. It runs the full version of Photoshop without any problems. We have it mainly for our photographic hobby. I also have 3 other lots of software loaded from our digital cameras. Our laptop is now 2 years old.

For the price i paid for ours you can now get a reasonably priced laptop with more kit.

I would go for:-

3 GB of memory at least.

200 GB plus hard drive.

Wireless broadband card built in.

If possible a good say Nvidea graphics card.

Windows 7, not Vista!!!

DVD multi + and - rewriter drive.

If possible digital camera card readers built in, although external usb plug in card readers are not expensive.

I have a 15.6inch screen, but wish i had a 17 or 19 inch screen for the photography.

Hope this helps.

Have a look at Mesh Computers online. They are the manufacturers and usually you will find that you will get a better spec for your money than from PC World, who are normally 6 months behind. Also don't get the slow Celeron processor and I would think for what you intend doing a dedicated graphics card is a must.

I'm sure it'll be ok. I'll be using it for tethered shooting too. I won't be storing much work on it as I've got a 1TB external hard drive for it.

Lisa,

Good choice. The ATI Radeon graphics card is a good one with 512mb of graphics memory.

The 3GB of memory and 250GB hard drive coupled with the graphics card is just perfect for photoshop and storeing loads of photos and videos.

The Lightscribe DVD Multi drive is excellent for transfering your work.

If i were you i would take up the free offer of the upgrade to Windows 7.

Good luck with your new Laptop.

Thanks Hamer. When it comes, I'll be picking up broadband in the house via the router.

I just need to find out about broadband dongles for when we go away.

p.s. The photography is paying for itself now.

Lisa,

Sounds a good set up. In our computer/photography room i have the desktop computer connected to the BT hub via Ethernet, and the laptop wireless. both computers are connected to the scanner and printers. This enables my wife and i to work on photographs at the same time.

In the caravan i use a 3 dongle which is fine when i can get a signal. Before i renew the 3 contract i will check the coverage of other dongles such as vodafone. On some sites i use on a regular basis friends have been able to get a stronger signal. On some sites , such as Malvern C.C., the strength of the signal depends on which pitch i am on, so now i know which pitches to aim for!!!
