Im looking to buy an LCD TV to use in the caravan. At present I use a Crown LCD only when on mains hook up but wish to use it on the caravans 12v system when this is not available. To get a 12v cable and connector made up appears difficult (it has a mini Din plug connection!)although the parts are available from Maplin. Does anyone out there have an LCD Tv that they use on their 12v system?

Hi Dave,

I bought a Sharp 15inch LCD TV last year, after a bit of looking around shops and looking at the back of the sets on display I noticed very few run on 240v ac. Most use a small transformer and a plug similar to a mobile phone charger to supply the TV with a dc voltage, different makers use various dc voltages, the Sharp I found was 12volt, I think this is now obsolete but the newer models may also be 12volt, you would have to check on the back of yours or the display models in shops, the voltage is normally moulded into the casing around the input socket. I got a plug from Maplins and used a standard caravan 12volt plug to make up a lead, I dont use the transformer at all now even when on mains as the 12volt lead is fine, I also got a freeview box [Sagem] which is 12volt and this works well when a good signal is available. The lead is easy to make if you have a soldering iron. I hope this helps

Simon.

I have a n 15in Manhattan in the van which I have used only on 12V for 3+ years and a 7in LCD TV in the car for rear view when towingalso only used on 12V.

That has what looks like a mini Din plug but the pin configuration is different.

I could not find a socket to fit it as I wished to shorten the cable .I ended up cutting a round hole in the back of the glove box and putting the excess cable through it !

Fortunately the other end of the cable was a standard round jack type

My friend has an LG and a long search for that plug ended at Leisure Power at Warrington.

To all those that repiled to my question on LCD tv's, many thanks. It seems to me like a very confusing and provocative(?) subject. Of what I've seen so far only a few ran on 12v! Asking anyone in the big stores gets a blank expression and unable to help. Oh well I'll keep on looking. Thanks again to all.

Dave

Dave - apologies for hijacking your thread!!!......

My daughter has lost the remote control for my LCD tv. Can you buy a universal one? If I got in touch with Sharpe, does anyone know approx how much a replacement one would cost?

Thanks

Lisa
