Le Havre

Hi, I have been advised that we can park our caravan overnight at the ferry terminal at Le Havre. We are thinking of getting the 3.00 p.m. ferry from Portsmouth that arrives at Le Havre at 9.30 p.m.and then staying at the port. If this facility does exist is it safe? and easy to find?

Pete, the o/night parking is just at the ferry terminal building, in the car park. I stopped there about 3 yrs ago,

there were lots of vans there (in July)so there was 'safety in numbers' but as always take sensible precautions, dont leave any windows open at night, use only the roof hatches. We use a portable alarm (cost about

The other option which I use, is to stay at the Municipal site at Foret de Montgeon in Le Havre - it's about a 10 min drive from the ferry terminal. Not a fantastic site, but OK for a stop over.

Although you can stop at most French ferry ports, my advice would always be to buy a copy of the Michelin Campsite Guide and see if there is a proper site close by. You may prefer to start your holiday in a car park with noise all around, feeling nervous every time a car pulls up or a gang of yobs walks past, a refridgerated lorry leaving its motor running just a few yards away but it's not for me. Even the most basic site will be on grass, will be reasonably quiet and, most important of all, safe. If you arrive late you may have to stay in the late arrivals enclosure. You can still get out, go for a walk and leave your van feeling reasonably sure it will be there on your return.

There is no problem with using the Ferry Terminal area car park. Use the terminal toilets when open, the only water I could find was from the toilet wash basins!

We have used that crossing a few times but have prebooked, through the Caravan Club, a site at Pont Audemer about 25 miles away. The Caravan Club notify the site of our late arrival and the site manager waits for us before closing the site gate. We usually arrive there at around 10.30pm and have a secure and restful night, away from the noise that you are likely to experience on the dockside. It is also a much nicer site than the municipal site at Le Havre.

We (no kids now) want to camp in the Soulac area perhaps l'Amelie nearby. Any recommendations? It must be quiet and near the sea. Also are the lifeguards dictatorial in that area. (We have spent time near Messange and everybody was crowded into 100m of sea - standing room only.) I know it is probably for our own good bnut we onlysplash around near the edge. Thanks.

I have been looking at Camping Soleil-Plage at Vitrac. Anyone been there? Alternatively is there a nice site centrally placed here and easy for canoes to hire. Thanks.

Keith
