Leaking Awning

I've got a Suncamp 390 Awning and when we last used it , it was raining.

I noticed that there was an abnormal amount of leaking that was coming through the seams , or to be precise the stitching holes. Mostly it was from the awning rail seam but also from a couple of the pockets the cross members fit into.

Is this normal? (daft question I know).

The awning is less than a year old and we've only used it twice. I'm trying to find the reciept but if I cant I need to know if there's any solution to either curing or easing the problem.

Any ideas?

PS - Really like the awning as its quick , easy and light to use and becuase I have to put the awning up on my own its an ideal option at the moment.

Hi Roger,

When the awning seams were sewn together - the manufacturing process should have applied a sealing solution to the two fabric edges - then when sewn together, the stitching holes will be sealed. Or at least that one way it can be done.

So no, it's not normal - but it can and frequently does happen if the seam wasn't sealed properly...

You can buy tubes or "roll-on" pots of seam sealant (usually under

Hi Roger,

Yes this is normal.Normally once the awning gets wet the fabric expands and seals the stiching, but if they have not closed up buy a aerosol of Graingers Fabseal and spray the seam and all will be well. I have the 390 too and we had the same problem. Used the fabseal and it was fine after that.

I've also just bought a 390. Only used it the once and the sun shone the whole week thankfully. I did read somwhere in their instructions that due to the way the awning is manufactured some of the seams may leak and owners are advised to use a seam sealant on these. I bought a re-proofer spray and gave all the seams a good going over before I used it but due to good weather (for a change) don't know if it worked or not.

We have an Ultima 260 and had same problem in Cornwall last year. I remeber reading on instructions it was due to construction of it. Have bought fabseal since.

Hi Dan & Paula. Don't know where you read the instructions as I purchased a 260 Suncamp Ultima and there wasn't any instructions with it. When I queried about them from the dealer he said Suncamp didn't supply instructions with their awnings. Luckily I had seen one that had been put up. Ken

HI Roger

Last weekend I was in the rain in south devon with my NR Pullman erected and I also experienced the water dripping in via the awning rail and the second strip which you attach the poles to support the roof.. Strange thing is this is only the second time I've put the awning up from new and the first time it has had heavy rain on it. I'm wondering if I'd tightened up the horizontal poles too much having the effect of pulling the awning from the rail.Or do I need to do as suggested to you with the spray sealant.
