Across several caravan forums, there do seem to be an increasing number of recent Baileys with water ingress problems.

Our last caravan was a 2005 Bailey Ranger 470/4. I noticed that the sealant used on the awning rail, particularly around the front of the van, was applied very thinly.

A gap appeared in the sealant on either side of the front window near to the top. Shortly afterwards, I started to notice a damp smell in both front overhead lockers and can only presume that some water had made it's way in.

Hi H, we have friends with a Bailey that is less than a year old & its on its way back to them due to water ingress problems. It was returned to dealer who have referred it on to Bailey as the problem is so severe. It would seem Bailey have an I.D plate on the van and can check what sealer was use on that van ,batch number etc ,so I would certainly go back to your dealer

I hope this is of some use to you.

Hi

I know of three Bailey Ranger owners with water ingress. The problem starts from a crack high up on the front pannel where it joins the roof. In each case Bailey are standing by the vans and carrying out the repairs. However if you are the second owner the warrenty may be void.

I'm sorry to say that we had endless trouble with a new Bailey Ranger bought new in 2000. We had treatment for water ingress after virtually every service although we had (fortunately) taken out an extended warranty. We traded in 12 months ago and I won't ever consider another Bailey. All other makes have been fine. Bailey was less than helpful when I contacted them about this ongoing problem.

just to update any one who took the time to reply i took the van to a bailey approved service centre it seems the water leak stemmed from a poor door seal near the btm of the door it bypassed the water catchment device, {plastic groove with a hole to drain at the btm of the door on floor}, damp meter showed no damp reading around ceiling door area but on inspection the door at the btm wasnt sealing properly you could see daylight on close inspection the service agent is certain its not a panel seal or split, crack due to the meter readings, with the heavy rain high winds we have had in the last fortnight i tend to agree he's claiming for a new carpet and some mdf type wood panels that were showing some moisture next to floor, the door adjustment is quite straight forward pity they didnt get it right when it was maufactured, once again thanks for the replies h.

Hi h,

We had a Bailey Pageant 2002 Imperial, only 6 months old and we found dampness in the toilet compartment and in the shower compartment. The only cure was to replace certain panels and re-seal the awning rails. I was so disgusted I decided I would never buy another English 'van. A Bailey takes eleven minutes to go down the production line (alegedly) nuff said.

Have had my Hymer 2 years now and am sitting smuggly in my dry German caravan. Cheers everyone, WE won the war. Peter

Hi h

Glad you've got to the root of your problem. I don't think Bailey caravans are better or worse than any other 'big' name manufacturer - all makes seem to have some problems on individual vans. If you're unlucky to have one that leaks then you're going to have a poor impression of the make as a whole - just like cars. We've had our bailey ranger for 18 months and apart from a problem with funny tasting water which has now been rectified we have been very pleased with our van. We did have a slight film of mould on the cupboard doors last year although the van was kept in under cover storage but that was just due to condensation and was easily wiped off. Funnily, we've not had the same problem this year despite keeping the van in the same place. C'est la vie.
