Leaky lunar??

Hello

We have just got back from a very successful trip to the caravan show. We have narrowed down what we are after to 3 vans, well, 2 real contenders and one fall back. Our fav layout is the Lunar Quasar 615 (fixed end bunks). BUT, two other people (admittedly other dealers) described Lunars as 'leaky lunars' while we were there. Is this an old reputation they cant shake off or a real prob for lunars? If we got a used van are we asking for trouble??

Anyone have this van? Any comments on it would be welcome! the main reasons we like it are for the end bunks, proper door to close off the end bedroom (children!) and the separate shower.

Oh I had a `leaky Lunar` (according to a dealer). According to the dealers, I also owned leaky Mardons, Eccles, ABI...........

None of the dealers had actually SEEN any of the caravans before they were pronounced `leaky`.

Funny, but all the vans, of whatever make, they were trying to sell me were absolutely exemplary in their build quality......

Lunars can leak but so can all caravans and if you follow the posts on web sites and the articles in the caravan press i don't think Lunars are any worse than any other manufacturer. But manufacturers could do more at the design and production stage to reduce the chances of dampness.

We have two lunars, a 2001 gemini 615 that we are trying to sell and our new 2004 Lexon, both are dry as sticks. like other posts say every manufacturer turs out a dog now and again.

We settled on a Lunar in January this year after looking at many other makes. There is more to a caravan than just its build quality in that the layout needs to work for you to make daily living enjoyable. We have not regretted our decision and will take a chance on it leaking as we would with any other make, but with the knowledge that we at least have some warranty for that. If you like the layout, go for it.

Hi, We have A Quasar 615 and love it. Its our first van and I was dubious after hearing about the leaky lunar thing, but I think you read about problems with other vans as well as Lunars. In fact Lunars aren't mentioned as much on this forum as others. Back to the van, we bought ours in late 2005 and it was only 6 months old. Have been out in all weathers and dry as a bone. I like the new 615 as it has the seperate shower cubicle and ours was the last model made with the wet room. The layout is perfect for us - we have three small children. The oldest (6) sleeps on the top bunk which is very well enclosed and she has been sleeping on there since we got it and the twins, one was on the bottom bunk and one on the side dinette. Also the kitchen area is a decent size and the double bed is very comfortable. One more thing about the fixed bunks, they are a decent size and the children will not outgrow them. I have slept in the bottom bunk. Our friend have an Abbey with fixed bunks and the top bunk is almost unusable, very confined and no head room. Good luck Denise

Hi,Reading about your LEAKY Lunar queries. We fell into the same trap as you and bought our first very Leaky Lunar quite a few years ago. It completely fell apart, no matter how many people had tried to prevent the leaks.....it was just impossible. There is a caravan for sale on Ebay at the moment full of rot .....yes it's a Lunar, and yet other caravans of the same age are okay. Anyway going back to us like you we fell for the design of yes....another LEAKY LUNAR and decided we would not touch it but the sales guy convinced us that they certainly didn't leak today. The caravan was a 2002 and we bought IT 6 months old and paid a lot of money for it. It was a dream...but 2 years on it started to leak inside and now 5 years old the interior has gone spongy which means it has been leaking between the outer and inner skins for a very long time....probably since new.NEVER EVER BUY A LEAKER LUNAR...DON'T FALL INTO THE TRAP OF LOVING THE DESIGN AS I DID UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOSE A LOT OF MONEY.......LUNARS STILL LEAK AND I WOULD NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER.

Lesley, there is no need to shout.

In regards to Abby's concerns, we (as Denise) too bought a Lunar Quaser 615 from Campbells of Preston, this is also a 2005 model but we have the extra storage space, as opposed to the separate shower. I am sure that when the van undergoes its annual service, then any damp readings will be rectified under the warranty. When the warranty runs out I will still have the van serviced by an authorised dealer and pay to have any work required carried out.

Lesley, you say the damp started to appear after 2yrs and is now alot worse after 5yrs. Did you not have the faults rectified when they first appeared?

In regards to other vans, I know for fact that the new Bailey suffers from this problem, as I have a freind who works for them in Bristol,

best regards, Martin

Not shouting just can't believe that Lunar won me over by their design rather than their build. As I said the problem with the first caravan could not be rectified by anyone.

"Lunar won me over by their design rather than their build"

That is the story of the entire UK caravan industry ;)

Salesman: "Just look at this year's model, Sir, it's full of breathtaking new features"

Customer: "Have they started to seal the properly?"

Salesman: It's got a tracker fitted as standard, Sir

Customer: Yes, but are they still using that aluminium cover strip that leaves the joins exposed?"

Salesman: "Those dark tinted windows are new for this year, Sir"

Customer: "I daresay - but what about the mastic?, are they still using the stuff that drys out and crumbles away?"

Salesman: "This year's Ocinaro upholstery matches the built in egg-timer, Sir"

Customer: "But-what-about-the-build quality?! - for instance, is the roof double bonded?

Salesman: This sensor here, Sir, operates the welcome chime that plays 'There's no place like home' when you approach the van........Sr?, Sir, where are you going Sir? - I wanted to show you the new gold coloured rings for the cooker..........."

Customer: Don't worry, I'm just going to get my cheque book - I can see that there has been absolutely no improvement in build quality, and I'm still daft enough to buy it"

Salesman: Phew!...you had me worried for a minute there Sir!
