Leisure battery doesn't seem to charge - help!

We are on-site at the moment, with a hook-up. When we set off we plugged in the car electrics, set the fridge to 12V and set off. When we arrived, our motor-mover wouldn't work and on investigation we found the battery was totally flat.

The fuse had blown so we replaced it, but the battery won't charge from the hook-up. We have been on-site for 2 days now, and the battery is still showing no charge, although the green light is on when it is connected up.

Do we need to buy a new battery, or is there something else we can do?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Cath,

Sorry to hear your problems and of course things always go wrong when away from home.

Could be a few things that has caused this.

Odd that the fuse has blown, but on replacing it, has not blown again.

How old is the battery, as if has is getting on, a complete discharge, could just tip it over the edge and will not hold a charge.

Could be, although the green light is on, that the caravan charging system is at fault and not charging the battery.

Ask around the site if you don't have one, if someone has a volt meter, they can then check to see if any charge is coming out the caravan battery charger.

I had a faulty Zig unit and like yours the green light was on, but on putting a meter on it, is was only giving out 4.5 volts instead of the more usual 13+.

You could also take the battery to a garage, who should be able to put a meter on it and tell you if the battery is still OK or needs replacing.

Hope you manage to get the problem sorted out, so you can enjoy your caravaning.

Regards.

GP.

Which fuse was blown, was it n inline fuse from the 12S?

We had a problem with non charging of battery on site, turned out it was the blade fuse on the caravan mains unit which had blown.

Also which van do you have and what year is it? On some older vans you have a rocker switch which you have to set to car, caravan or of.
