locked topics

why was the topic regarding government expenditure locked? Having read the whole thread, i could find nothing inflammatory. Indeed there was a very interesting debate taking place involving caravaners whose liveleyhoods , lives and holidays could be affected by the political and economic issues we are all facing today.

I frequent many different forums, from R/C to Music and Theatre, and of all the forums (some privately owned, others not) this forum appears to very quickly stifle some debats.

A forum is a by its very nature a place for debate.Threads often develop , change direction and evolve , but thats what threads do, and is certainly not a reason to lock them.
The word forum means exactly that, in latin it translates as " market place" and was an open, public area where people could meet to dicuss and debate current topics.
I fully appreciate the need for moderation , however it must be fair and should only occur wherewhen tempers get inflamed and there was no sign of this.

Moderation is the function of abitration and concilliation , and is not censorship.

Those forums that have allowed debates to evolve , and have actively encouraged the exchange of ideas, have seen large growth in memberships, that add to the whole mix of ideas and information thats available.

Moderation is quite a skill. Knowing when to step in to diffuse a situation, orperhaps editing posts is an art( lots of forums usually email the poster advising them of what they are doing and why). Locking threads should be a last resort, as you never know , the thread may take an unexpected turn and throw up intersting and possibly highly relevant facts for those interested in the debate.

The reasons have been posted in depth and will not be repeated again in this thread.
I know that the Moderators are always getting it wrong and that we are the bad boys of the forum, and it is all our fault, that we dont know how to moderate, and everyone else can do a much better job blindfolded and with hands behind their backs.
However, we moderate as an unpaid, unloved, unwashed, uncared for, unusually bereft of feelings and obviously take great pleasure in removing or locking topics just for the sake of it.

I shall now go and dress in sackcloth, cover myself in ashes and beat myself with bramble twigs to atone for all our failings

Do you know what, Damian, I don't know why you and the other mods do it - as you say, you're unpaid and largely unappreciated (I can't comment on the unwashed bit) and, generally speaking, get nothing but hassle when you make a modding decision.

So some people (and it generally seems to be the ones who get most involved in the more, shall we say, controversial topics) don't agree with the moderating (even I don't always agree, and I'm an ex-mod!!) - well tough, they're the mods! Simple choice really, either accept their decisions, or go and find another forum.

The mods were appointed by Haymarket - people could always complain to them, the (non)paymasters, if they really don't like their decisions. As far as I'm aware, though, no mod has ever been relieved of their duties, so Haymarket must be happy with their work!

I really don't understand why some posters always have to turn things into a battle when the mods have done something the posters don't like. At the end of the day, it's only a forum, it's not a matter of life or death. Peace and love - it will soon be Christmas!

thats fine as far as it goes exept moderators or as some forums call them monitors are just like referees and should at all times be impartial but this is not allways the case remember how it used to be with the mass exodus (as posters did exactly as you stated above)
the fact of the mater is sometimes referees make mistakes as we all do and this leads to complaints it is only human nature moderators have to have skins thicker than that of a rhino and rise above the argument allways "this is in no way a criticism of damian or parksy who on the whole do a terrific job. but I for one reserve the right to question a desicion I believe to be wrong.

This repetetive questioning is becoming a bit boring and silly now. You amongst others Colin have fully exersised what you see as your right to the point where the previous topic was also locked and I can visualise this one ending up the same way.
If you don't understand or can't accept any of the reasons already provided in other topics just email your questions and we can deal with them as and when time allows if necessary even though we are under no obligation to provide any explanations at all.
Sometimes things which are done for the good of the forum as a whole may upset certain individuals, unfortunately we can't please everybody all of the time and I don't intend to spend the rest of my life providing explanations. Get over it, all that happened was that a topic on a caravan forum was locked, it's not as though the Magna Carta has disappeared.

parksy my friend let me just say two things before drawing a line under this discussion.
1. in all the years we have been posting you should know by now that I only ever respond to a previous post when I believe there is a reason to do so and try to be as diplomatic as possible in the process, very rarely do I question a decision when it is made and only then when I feel; it was wrong or ill timed I do not see anything in the previous topics that deviate from this.

2. the magna carta was never intended to be a bill of rights for the common man it was only a document of agreement between king John and his barons the landed gentry that curtailed the powers of the king in the event of a dispute, http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/middle_ages/magna_01.shtml

Thanks for that information Steve, it was a very financially rewarding experience, so much so that I think I will make that a regular part of my "pennance" each week.( BTW it wasn't pennies they paid!!!

Forest - I take great exception to your comment that the topic was getting dull/boring. I will have you known sir that I am never involved in dull/boring topics, discussions or any other way of life that could be classed as dull or boring

I now await your grovelling apology or face the wrath of the same pennance as Damien. THE CHOICE IS YOURS. However in this instance it will be my wife dealing out the punishment for casting doubts on my characture.

Lord B. are you speaking from experience of the Brummie knocking shops? If so and they are that bad I will have to take my trade elsewhere
