Have a small quandry,my wife and i are going to stay with our son and family at Culkein/Drumbeg in September for two weeks. We live in Hastings he lives in Essex. The quandry is that the place we are staying at seems not to have a suitable place for our caravan in which we would normaly use for long trips and we take our time maybe take 4 day's to get there in visiting all the places on route. Now he is a fast driver and when we use to go together we would be pushing it ,however i am now 74 and he is 45 and he is suggesting we go in each car solo and stopping the night at Cumbernauld ,then going the rest of the day to the place, my wife is against this. Our mileage would be 723 his 85 less. what do you think.

It should be fine... I have done John O'Groats to Lands End in a day and although it took me just over 14 hours start to finish. Doing it over 2 days would be very easy if you do not stop too often as some people stop every hour! Just do not drive for more than about 2 to 2 and a half hours without a short break. Don't eat too much so just have a snack at each stop.

Hi Robert

My advice, never drive at someone else's pace. Only drive within your own comfort zone. I would arrange to meet him at your final destination and make your own way there.

I drive about 45,000 a year so 730 over two days would be ok, however, if you are not used to long distance driving this is a long journey. With stops you will be looking at 14 hrs.

Last year we drove from Rotterdam to Milan, towing, about the same distance as you are planning. Took us 17hrs. But we had three drivers and swapped strictly every 2 hours.

Cheers

Hi Stuart, last Easter we drove with caravan to Dresden Germany which is about 700 miles and we done it in 2 day's. I think i was having a feeble moment when i wrote about it. Of course you are right about going our own pace so splitting the journey into two day's is ok.Thanks for comment.

hi all

for my sins im an hgv driver.in my job the law states that after 4.5hrs driving i have to take a break of at least 45mins and after driving that long you need a break, and im use to driving long distances and im tired after 4.5hrs.

take as many breaks as you want, drive at the speed that you feel comfortable with and get there in your own time, after all its your holiday too
