Not all UK car insurers will cover you abroad for that length of time - so check with your present insurer what their conditions are.

If you're out of the UK for more than 6 months, you're not "normally resident here" so you may find you can't use a conventional policy anyway.

Green card cover isn't the same level as fully comp here so check that.

A few blue chip motor insurers will give you full UKcover for upto 270 days Iin EU countries.
I strongly suggest you speak to your own motor insurers regarding what they can offer.

hi roger,i know not all insurances are the same but i have used many different insurances and my green card has always given me fully comp abroad. now I'm not certain on this next point and insurance companies being so devious too, but my understanding of EU law with regards car insurance is they the insurance company has to give you insurance at least to RTA level.[third party. and no 10, 20, or 30 day maximum use of, is actually legal. you could be resident,in Dover and travel daily by car to Calais for work, and no matter what the insurance company states ,you would have minimum third party cover. but of course having higher cover than that would be better...

Hello Dougie and Carol

The first thing to do is to consult the terms and conditions of your existing policy, which will provide information about what non UK motoring they will cover. You may find your current policy does what you want.

If you don't find what you're looking for then I think you should take a two pronged approach: As Dusty suggests Contact your insurer and ask them to clarify, or see if they have alternative policies that will do. And also find an independant insurance broker (not the compare websites) and ask them to look at the 'Whole Market' for a suitable policy.

The green card does not give you comprehensive cover abroad. What you have to be given is the minimum cover required for the country you are visiting which will always be a type of third party cover for third party injuries and may include third party damage. Any more than that is between you and your insurer, some companies will give you comprehensive cover and others charge an additional premium so you need to check this out before going abroad.
As to long term cover abroad this varies between companies and you need to speak to your insurer to see what they are prepared to do, the larger companies with offices abroad may give you a better deal. Most foreign countries have a higher accident rate than us and therefore higher premiums, so expect to pay more.
