I have just booked a weekend at this Lakes 'no facilities' site. As we are new caravanners and have not used a 'no facilities' site before I am a bit apprehensive. Has anyone stayed at this site? What is it like? TIA

low Manesty is possibly my favourite site. You can park up there and forget the car for a week if you want to. The walking from the site is splendid, you can catch the boat to Keswick where the shopping is good for both food ( EH Booths supermarket is excellent) and umpteen outdoor clothing shops.

As first time caravanners beware that

1) Access to the site is a little tight in palces, proceed with caution after leaving Keswick towards Grange. When you get to the bridge at Grange just make sure nothing has started to cross it before you turn right to go over yourselves. It's a single track bridge. (That's why it's strictly no arrivals before 12.00pm)

2)Some of the pitches are difficult to manouvere into and you need levelling blocks.Avoid parking in the ones that have trees over them as the rain(and it will!) drips on the roof at night keeping you awake.

That said, don't be put off. It's a brilliant site. No facillities means you use all of yours. That's why you bought the van !

I agree with what Rioja said, a lovely site, one of the best we've been to although I did find the female warden a little scatty :O)

From the site you can walk straight out to the lake. There are red squirrels around the site but in the summer, with the leaves on the trees, they spend more time in the canopy.

The drive from Keswick is narrow, especially once you've crossed the double humped single track bridge at Grange but nothing to worry about if driving carefully.

When on site and driving to Keswick turn right, it's a narrow road but the views are spectacular of Keswick and Derwent Water.

Another place for good views is to take the turning to Watendlath off the Keswick to Grange road and at the top theres a car park with magnifent views as far as Bassenthwaite Lake.

Go - you will love it. Pop down to the Scafell hotel in Rosthwaite (about 3 miles south) great food and a cracking little bar round the back packed with walkers/campers. Our favourite area in the Lakes. Andy
