We're looking to stay at Low Park Wood in Cumbria and The Ranch in Ayrshire later this year.

Has anyone been to either of these sites recently? Had a look on UK Campsite but the reviews are very recent.

Low Park Wood was being " renovated" , might have finished by now. It's a pleasant site, close to the motorway but not really in Lake District.Well positioned for driving to various places.

Lots of the pitches are a bit uneven, all hardstanding, in little glades. You are basically in the woods.

Coniston is similar, Troutbeck is more open and in my opinion a better location.

Hi Martin,

Have not stayed on any of these sites but only live 40minutes from "The Ranch", looks a very nice site and has received a very good writeup in the current CC magazine which also features Craigie Gardens site in Ayr which I can vouch for.

Hope this may be of help.

William

Low Park Wood suited us fine, in so much as it is a large site in terms of area but appears quite `intimate` as there are so many glades and pitching areas.

Good for walking and dogs, lots of wildlife, but not the place to sit and sunbathe. You pays your money and takes your choice.

I prefer it to an open field with regimented rows, but fortunately we are all different.....

I agree with Angus regarding the field/regimented rows comment. Low Park Wood is a big site but it doesnt give that impression, lots of trees. It is situated next to the River Kent and I'm told that years ago there was a gunpowder works there as will be seen by the ruins and dried up canal. If you want a nice pitch go for #28, it's all on its own. The wardens call it the honeymoon suite. When we book in at reception we have an idea sometimes what pitch we would like by looking at the site plan on the CC website then in the reception you can see if it's available if the key is hanging up.

We stayed at Low Wood Park about four years ago, it was ideal for the two of us.

When we went there was a seperate area for the larger/twin axle caravans presumably due to access and pitch size.

Hi Martin

We like Low Park Wood and have stopped there overnight a few times but also spent a week there. Angus and Lord B are right; it doesnt't feel big as it's made up of little groups of pitches. It's ideal as a stopover en route from Scotland to anywhere south of the midlands but worth a longer visit too.

We've not used The Ranch but like William can reccommend Craigie Gardens, it's quiet but still within a short walk of Ayr town centre.

We've decided to stay at Craigie Gardens for 5 nights at the beginning of Septemeber. Only problem now is where to go afterwards. The choice has been narrowed to down to Low Park Wood, Troutbeck Head or Meathop Fell.

Is there plenty to do around Low Park Wood for a 2 year old?

Hi

We stayed at Low Wood Park about 18 months ago. It was all under trees with pitches close together and no views. If you want to stay near Kendal, try the Kendal CCC site. Views, 20-25 mins walk into town, by a farm (lambs and other animals when we've been there), none of the traffic noise you get at LWP, and more widely spaced pitches.

We never heard any traffic noise at Low Park Wood.

Maybe it was drowned out by the deafening sound of the River Kent which is immediately adjacent to the site?

You are not wrong Angus and don't worry you haven't gone deaf. I think Denise is getting Low Park Wood mixed up with another site. There was certainly no traffic noise while I was there, probably because it was a long way from the main road. To confirm that my memory wasn't going I checked it out on Virtual Earth.

Nope definitely noise from the main road not far from the site! Perhaps it depends which pitch you are on or perhaps I'm more sensitive to road noise than most. Incidently, if anyone's interested, I can come up with a 25ish mile walking route you can access not far from this site which hardly touches civilisation. Heavenly.

I suppose it could depend which way the wind is blowing but once Her Ladyship engages her tongue her jaw goes into overdrive which will drown out most noise.

With regards the 25 mile walk I will go only on condition you give me a piggyback :O)

piggiback only if you will fit in 20 litre ruck sack and weigh under 5 kilos! Walk could be split down as views from Scout Scar are terrific if not as far reaching as those from Whitbarrow on the other side of the Lyth Valley.
