I've just booked a crossing with Norfolkline for May/June (£84 - not bad!) with intention of heading for Luxembourg. We arrive in Dunkirk at 1.00pm and don't really want to do the whole 250-odd miles in one hop as we will have had a long run to get down to Dover.

Can anyone suggest a site in Belgium on the Luxembourg side of Brussels that would be easily accessible for a one-nighter.

How nice to be thinking about summer holidays in the middle of this freezing weather.

All suggestions gratefully received, and a happy New Year to all.

Camping Blaarmeersen at Gent is to be recommended. About 90 miles from Dunkerque and 20 miles or so from the Brussels ring. Gent is a city often overlooked and, for my money, is more attractive than Brugges.

Have you picked a site in Luxembourg yet? If you want to be near Luxembourg city itself and do not need on site entertainment/pool etc. look at Camping Kockelscheuer. Buses to the city stop nearby, we found it handy three years running.

For an alternative, if and you want to stop at a super site we stay at one 20 mins from Vianden which is in Luxemburg. It is 5 star 15 euro's a night with ACSI "Prumtal Camping" at Oberweiss in Germany, between Bitburg and Vianden. They have a 5 star Restaurant of which the prices are so reasonable a wonderful Swimming Pool and a huge Football Field and kids area if you have kids (all Free) but well away from the Caravan Pitches. The toilet and shower blocks are excellent. If you go onto their website you can look at site pitches, and Restaurant Menu. Herr Kohler and family, who own and run the whole site, are very friendly and most helpful and speak perfect English. We have stopped there 8 times now and it never varies, we always park down overlooking the River which is very pleasant indeed.

The Eiffel part of Germany is very pretty and lots to see. Bitburg is excellent for shopping food is very cheap. Fuel is obtainable at least 2 garages in Vianden, cheapest in Europe, where there is a nice Castle to visit too. Trier is within easy reach and is the oldest City in Germany and Bernkastel Kues on the Mosel is just under an hour away. If you have not been there the old centre all cobblestone streets is

breathtaking and like a fairytale town.

We had a lovely meal in the restaurant. Its also very popular with the locals. Oberweiss is a lovely spot and I quite liked the campsite as well!

Thanks for all the suggestions. IN the past we have stayed at two sites in Luxembourg: Camping Gritt, which we thought we might head for as it has cycle tracks adjacent, and one at Esche-sur-Alzette which was fine in itself but up a very steep hill. We'll have a look at all the sites in the CC 'bible'.

The municipal at Born about half way between Echternach and Wittemburg (which used to be the road border crossing before the autobahn was built)on the Eastern border is very pleasant and quiet alongside the river. Much birdlife to see. Good clean modern facilities and and good bar/restaurant. Good English at Reception.

If youbtake sat TV park the van away from the river and along the site else the high ground on the other side of the river can be an obstruction.

Echternach (a very old city - Google it) is about 20 minutes, Luxembourg city and Trier about 45mins. Cheapest fuel in western Europe.

Indeed the cheapest fuel in Europe. However get filled up when you can. If you wait to get it at the last garage before the border you will join a queue which makes the M25 at rush hour seem like a race track.
