Hi Dave

I bought a wireless camera/monitor kit, and installed it on my 8m caravan.

When it is not suffering from interference, the picture is good and is very helpful when overtaking and seeing what is immediately behind the van. Interference seems to be caused by reflected radio waves from trees - especially when their leaves are out.

I have to say that it would not be a lot more work to install a wired system. Given the benefit of hindsite, that's what I would do.

The camera mounted on the back of your vehicle must have a power supply. I took mine from the fridge 12V supply. That necessitated taking cable from the camera to the front of the van. Its not much more work to bring a wired output from the camera up to the hitch.

Re: monitor in the front of the car, I got a 7" display, its too big. 5" would be less obtrusive.

Hope that this is of some help to you.

Regards

John

I've been using wired cameras for about 10 years

I avoided the wireless as I was concerned about interference

I usually bump into the same group of motor caravanners in France every year and they tell tales of their wireless systems such as bing able to see themselves on the camera screen as they pick up signals from CCTV cameras en route

One guy was telling me how his friend picked up the filling station CCTC and was able to tell him how much diesel he had bought and how much he had paid

Have a look on ebay

Hi DD,

Sorry for delay in replying - got sent on a course for a week. I drilled the rear panel of my van, with my heart in mouth!! Used loads of mastic in the hole after the job was done and there is no evidence of any water ingress.

The 7" display I use is on the dash, located in the passengers corner, and is removable with a simple wing nut, although the bracket stays there(sticky thingy). But I do find that the display is too large. Perhaps with a 5" a central location maybe better. In my Sorento with sat nav in, there's no room.

Looking at cameras that are available, there are ones with two lenses in, one for close view and one for distance, but they are comparatively expensive. I find the view with the lens fitted to mine as perfectly ok for rear view when reversing, and for vehicles approaching to overtake. Its all in the set up!

I can't get too excited at running the cable/s in the awning channel. I think that the maybe prone to damage there when brushing up against bushes etc.
