Marks On Tow ball

It's difficult to say without seeing the towball as your idea of a deep mark can be different to someone else's. You also don't say whether you've already used the towbar, in which case it could have been scoured by grit, or whether it was like that when you purchased it. Actually, the surface roughness allowed by the relevant standards for towballs is quite appreciable so normally there is no cause for concern.

Hi Gareth, One possible cause to look out for isd when coupling up try not to let the outer edge of the hitch land heavily on the ball. When this happens a slight movement of the van causes the hitch to scrape across the ball and the drop into it's position,casing the damage
