Hi jo-anne

I have a bit of both.

I like my tea in a normal mug so I bought a set of 6 cheapies and then I would not worry if they broke (so far they have not even chipped!)

Same with glasses ...we have some of both.

It means that when we have lots of visitors to the caravan I have plenty of drinking items and it keeps the weight down.

It is really nice to have your glass of wine in a normal glass like at home and why not. My caravan is my home when we are in it and so I do the same as I would at home.

All I would say is do not take your best china in the caravan have a seperate set for the van.

Others will possibly disagree, but at the end of the day it is what suits you. Joyce

We were fortunate when looking for crockery for our first caravan. TOH wouldn't use melamine, and I was reluctant because it scores so easily, so we had a good look around for some lighter weight equipment. We found Arcopal (made in France) which is great. It does need a bit of care and cannot be left in situ when travelling as it is made of fine glass. However, the packing away I feel is worth it. We are still using it in our current van (15 years down the line!). Alas, I am given to understand that it is almost impossible to obtain Arcopal now so it will be heavier crockery eventually.

Cannot stand drinking my wine out of plastic so I also take cheap glasses. One large store sells 4 wines glasses for around 80p. Easily replaced following any accident.

Just a word about real glasses, mugs, & crockery. They can do a hell of an amount of damage to the inside of a 'van if they get loose during transit, so make sure they're well stored.

We use melamine plates and bowls but like others we like china cups. One word of caution when we changed our van the new one came with a micro wave, and I discovered to my cost the melamine was not microwave friendly, I put a bowl in the micro wave and the inside of the bowl bubbled. So we keep a couple of microwave friendly bowls and plates as well.

Arcopal is still available, I have recently bought some but could only find it in plain white.

Yes, mcgee, I pack my crockery extremely well during transit and store it in the bottom of a base cupboard. Perhaps thats why it has lasted so long!

I dropped and smashed all of ours too.

Never been allowed to wash up since....a good result I think!!!
No Rod, he doesn't get off that lightly. I thought that one of the rules of caravanning was that washing up was done by men and children!

Melamine crockery, but proper glasses - different ones for different drinks (wine, champagne, G & T etc). For about 15 years we took a glass cafetiere, packed in the same cupboard year after year. But this year the door came open in transit and the cafetiere fell out and broke. Only casualty we've ever had.

Thanks for the information, Rod. I will check out this site as I have a friend who has been searching for Acopal for over a year now!

We use crockery - a standard 16 piece is usually reasonably price and you can chose a set to match the colour scheme in your van. We also take glasses - I do think, following on from the comments above, that wine just does not taste the same out of anything else.

IN the 10 years we have been caravanning not one piece has broken in transit. Just depends on your packing! I probably break more at home but then thats probably because I spend less time in the van.

Hi

We use melamine plates but like to drink from fine china mugs and fine glass tumblers and glasses. The mugs have been bought from gift shops on our travels and are transported in the fixed racks in the roof locker, each pair separated with a paper napkin to prevent them rattling against each other in transit. The tumbers and wine glasses are Dartington crystal and live in the boxes in which they were bought in another roof locker. The only breakage was about 3 years ago when heading for the washup area in the pitch black and a step was missed causing one wine glass to bite the dust. Other than that, in approx 50 nights a year each year, we've had no more breakages. We haven't yet change to china plates/bowls because of the weight issues but reading other peoples comments, perhaps its time we looked into it.

Regards

Denise

There is just one comment I wish to add. The only crockery racks I have found that actually fit the lockers, will only take the melamine stuff safely.

So, you either waste space elsewhere or use the defined space with Melamine. Sitting outside in the sun I don't see the poblem, I am not that snobby. Of course for the drinks, then only the leaded crystal will do, 'Chin Chin'.

Scotch lad - you're obviously putting the wrong ones in! The only crockery racks that I have had have come fitted with the caravan and I have never had any problems with my crockery fitting very nicely thanks. Pehaps you should stick to your man jobs! (ouch)
