Sorry to have so many questions, microwave ovens, we have a small one at home and was thinking of using it in the van and buying a new microwave for home.

Dose it have to be a certain wattage for the van as I don't wont to blow a fuse on the site, plus a small electric kettle and a steamer, that way I could say good by gas as I have a small blow fan/heater.

Has anyone else gone all electric?

The microwave should have a label on the reverse giving you how many watts it uses (do not confuse this with the cooking power also in watts) In the case of the one in my van it draws 900 watts and uses 230v, rough rule of thumb is watts divided by volts equals amps i.e: 900/230 = 3.9 (ish) so about 4 amps.

Most hookups are a max of about 16 amps, so you need to bear in mind what appliances you are using together to not overload the hookup.

Most domestic kettles are about 2 - 2.2 kilowatts (2000 - 2500 watts), therefore 2500/230 = 10.8 (ish) roughly 11 amps which combined with anything else is getting close to you limit.

A reasonable low wattage kettle can be had for about 12 - 15 pounds, they are a good deal slower than a domestic one, but much better than sitting in the dark when you cannot reset your hookup and the site warden is not about.

Regards

Danny

"a rough rule of thumb is watts divided by volts equals amps"

Please note that watts divided by volts to get amps is an exact law of physics, not just a rough rule of thumb. It is called 'Ohms law'.

I have one of Aldis plug testers that show how many watts are passing through it

On the Swift microwave it was using 1200 watts on full power

There was no initial surge as is often quoted

Lowering the microwave power setting (eg defrost) simply put the full 1200 watts on for shorter periods

1200W is about 5 amps

Very true, it has been a long time since I did my engineering apprenticeship.

I thought "Ohms Law" was about how many 'ouses you could build on an council estate.
Less houses on a council estate than on a private one with them all squeezed in. The developer gets more money if he squeezes more in. The council planning office don't seem to care.
