Microwaves in caravans

Hi-can anyone help me? We have just bought a new Coachman Pastiche and were planning to install a Matsui microwave in one of the lockers. However the microwave's instructions say there must be 4" gap all round-which we do not have, there would only be 1" at sides, tho we do have the correct 8" advised space above. The microwaves I have seen in other caravans seem to fitted in tight with no space around-are they specially vented? Are they specially made for caravans? Would the microwaves for sale in the caravan shops be a better buy, tho they are so much more expensive?

Many thanks for any advice. Carol

Our microwave came fitted in the caravan by the manufacturer and it certainly looks to fit exactly into the front of the cupboard. It is however a much bigger cupboard behind the microwave so there will be plenty of space around it. We found it very useful to have a microwave in the caravan.

I don't know if the ones in the caravan shops are different, the one we have is 1200 watts. Hope this is helpful

Hi Carol.

Most microwaves vent at the rear and the top of the rear panel. So long as you have plenty of air flow at the back then there should be no real problem. You could line the upper inside area of the chosen location with baking foil glued in place with "Grip fix", this will help to reflect heat away from what might be a storage shelf above the microwave.

Our microwave is a 850watt bought from Comet for 39-99. It works fine and has done for the past four years. It is not necessary to by the low watt specific caravan ones unless your going on 6 amp hook ups.

Hi,

Just a note - the watt rating quoted with a microwave oven is the output power of the microwave, and not the input power requirement to run the microwave, turntable motor and other electronics.

An 800 watt microwave has a power requirement of 1000 watts - not much difference but it might just foul up your calculations for a low wattage French camp site.
