What's the rule of thumb when buying a microwave to lug around, I don't want to pay the prices they charge for "specialist caravan" models when you can pick a normal, basic one up from Argos for £30, I've been told to look for the power input rather than power output when choosing. Any help would be appreciated.

we just bought the first one we liked from argos , plugged in and use as normal , as you say it was less than thirty quid , gets used mostly at peak times with everything else on and never had a problem , great for kids hot chocolate .

It will trip out the site electrics on many sites that are rated at 6 or even 10 amps if used with a 2kw fire

The fire will be using 8 amps and the mirowave could be using 6 amps on start up so that is 14 amps and a 10 amp supply just won't cope

CC and C & CC sites have a 16 amp supply but they both have notices asking people not to use more than 1kw (4amps) at peak periods as the site electrics won't stand it

In France many site hook ups are rated at 6 amps

We have only found one site in 20 years where we could not use the microwave and that was in Prague even with everything else switched off

Last year in Pin Parasol in France we had night with no heating/electric because the 2kw fire plus the water heater coming on on thermostat blew the site 10 amp cartridge fuse which the site owner had to replace the next morning

So its really better to always switch off the other appliances before microwaving as some site wardens are not too pleasant and some even charge when asked to reset trips
