Steve, the picture is of cardigan bay. Newquay is in the heart of the bay and probably one of the last few traditional seaside holiday villages left. It has a very beautifull harbour and safe sandy beaches. Parking is a bit hard but so long as you get there before 10am in the peak season you should be able to park in the sea front car park, otherwise it's a trek from the main parking at the top of town. Not too bad going down but the 1 in 4 hill does get you on the way back after a day on the beach.
Sailing and fishing is good and there are charter boats available for inshore fishing parties.
I used to go there very frequently and also when I had an engineering business, I undertook the manufacture and repair of the running gear for the charter skippers.
