Minimum Tyre tread depth

Can anyone tellme what the min tyre tread depth is for France?

We are going in September.

I enquire as for some reason the tyre garage told me they thought it was 3mm not 1.6mm. Looking on the internet is seems it is 1.6mm, except for winter tyres, but I want to be sure.

Change the tyres at 3mm or five years, then you know your safe, whatever the law says!

1.6 mm across ALL of the tyre.

Also there can't be more than a 5mm difference in tread depth on the 2 tyres on the same axle.

I always change tyres at 5 yrs, knowing that it is 1.6 makes life a lot easier.

If it were 3mm then I would have at least 4mm on the tyres, which would shorten tyre life considerably.
