I attended the Caravan Club reversing course a couple of weeks ago and the instructors said that a 4x4 mirrors are usually big enough that you dont need additional mirrors. In their opinion they merely hamper reversing and give a confusing view of the rear. I questioned the legalities of towing without additional mirrors and was told that it was not a legal requirement.

The tip they gave was to position each mirror so that the rear passenger door handle was in the lower left (6-9 oclock and 3-6 oclock) quadrant of both near and offide mirrors.

I use the previous model Milenco and they are fine and rock steady usefully they retain the view in the existing mirrors and allow you to adjust them as normal. Only critical comment is the safely straps do in time scratch the mirror housing.

Try the newer ones as these look as if they will fit and I think they have left off the safety strap. Point to watch is are the clamps thin enough to fit between the glass and housing without jamming the mirrors adjustment.

Useful tip: put them on with the mirrors folded. Then you know that you can fold them in when that oncoming "white van" is going to squeeze past you down the lane!

You need them to see completely along a 2.3 metre van, but only just so if its a narrower van then you might get away with it.

Anthony;

You should be able to see along the whole side flank of the caravan.

Thus the minimum you have to be able to see is a following vehicle just outside the width of your van.

If your mirrors are wider than the van then you can see a bit in behind the van, but its not going to be much.

With the Disco3's mirrors you just cant see all the flank of a 2.3 m wide van when running straight; but its very close to being okay.

I find I have "centre mirror" through vision with my Disco3 and van which is very nice.

Great tow car.

Cheers John

Hi John

When I towed the van back from the dealer i used the "centre mirror" which was very handy.

I could see part the way down the van just not all the way.

I know this is wrong but I was so concerned with what was happening infront of me i forgot to look behind, so if anyone was stuck behind a very slow moving outfit on the A47 Sunday afternoon, that was me!!

I didnt realise towing a van would create me so many friends, the beeps and waving (looked like waving gestures!)as people overtook me touched my heart!

Im now looking for a forum for in a rush BMW driver to thank them personally!

Also im back on the road on Monday, heading north up the A1(M)....

Anthony
