I am switching from the Thetford blue and pink chemicals to the Elsan organic range which can be used for flush and tank.

I have run out of blue for the cassette so will start using the elsan organic but want to use up the thetford pink.

Does anyone know if these chemicals react together or is it ok to mix until i use up the rest of the pink?

However, most sites on a septic tank insist upon it and ban “blue” chemicals.

Then you would need to go elsewhere. How would they know anyway if you used blue? We tried the organic rubbish and it never worked so went back to Elsan.

We tried Elsan organic in both tanks and it stained the bowl a delightful grey colour.
I think you are supposed to clean the cassette out when switching from formalehyde to organic also.

I believe septic tanks rely on micro organisms to help break down the waste. The use of a formaldehyde based “blue” chemical will kill these and upset the workings of the tank. I also don’t see how they would know you were using it but the phrase “responsible caravanner” springs to mind.

There is some debate about just how harmful 'blue' chemical is to the bacteria in the septic tank. There is a paper somewhere on Thetford's website about it. My own feeling is it is down to concentrations and if the 'chemical' waste is mixed with the normal waste water from a toilet block and showers it should not be a problem. If you think about the amount of chemicals that are poured down domestic drains it is a wonder that the sewer treatment plants ever work. At the moment I feel that the use of 'Green' chemicals is driven by FUD - fear uncertainty and doubt with a generous amount of marketing thrown in for good measure. I have yet to see any scientific evidence for using either blue or green. If someone has any evidence to the contrary I would be interested to see it as it would probably change my thoughts on the matter. It would be a good piece of research for anyone doing a degree in something like environmental science.

Hi Graham, I tend to use CL’s, often without toilets or a shower block. A lot of these have a septic tank purely for toilet waste, the grey water being emptied at a separate point. I think these types of sites in the main are the ones that insist on “green” chemicals.

Hi Guys & Gals.
Having given various chemicals a realy good test I've come up with the cheapest recipie.
Buy a twin pack of blue and pink elsan on the cheapo offer of £14-99 from your local caravan shop and get 5litres of Elsan blue off flea bay for £17-99 including free postage.
The green version doesn't breakdown the solids too good (desperately trying not to be too graphic). Also the odour you get when pink and green is mixed in the waste tank is not nice. Also the said contents go black in colour and stain even the screw cap.

Hello all,
Has anyone used the normal blue fluid in the waste tank and a weak solution of blue in the flush tank? I can't personally see any problem because the two fluids both end up in the waste tank anyway. I just wonder if there's any need to have two types aboard.

Happy caravanning

Derek

Hi Derek, I dont use any additives in the flush tank, just water, there is no reason why you have to put it in the flush tank, (got told this on this forum, really good source) and I dont get the bacteria breeding micro----what ever they are things.
So I only carry blue now.

Hello Gagakev,
Thanks for prompt reply. I rather suspected that it wasn't entirely necessary to use anything other than water in the flush tank. Especially as we only ever use it for wee !!

We buy 4 litres of Elsan blue from our local caravan shop for £9.40 which is a lot cheaper than the £17.99 you are paying. The pink is the same amount for the same price. Once we run out of the pink, I think we will stop using it as it does not seem to serve any useful purpose except for making the flush water look a bit pretty. Lol
