Mobile Broadband Internet.

I've come across a couple of interesting offers for mobile broadband internet. Has anyone got any advice.

The one I'm tempted by is from Vodaphone and can be either a Data Card or USB modem.

I'm not keen on a fixed contract as at this stage I was only intending to use while away and just limited browsing. I'm not interested in picking e:mails or downloading music etc etc.

My dilema is that the package is for £32 per month for 18months , for which you get the modem/data card free and 3GB of data (whatever that means).

My questions are

1) I dont really want to commit to a fixed contract as usage will be very small , so should I look at alternatives?

2) What are the alternatives , bearing in mind I dont need or want a mobile phone contract.

3) How do you check what your usage is? (I'm on Windows XP and Vista for my lap top).

Help!

It depends whow much volume of data you intend to move back and forth, but although I have unlimited access, when I check on the actual figures, just out of interest, I rarely even get close to 1Gb. But then I don't download music or films or anything like that which involves a lot of data.

Hi Roger,

I use a Vodafone data card on a pay as you use basis if i'm away in the caravan and can't get to a wifi hotspot. It's a bit expensive to use that way but on the other hand I have no monthly contract, if I use it it is taken out of my bank account by direct debit.

Alternativly if you are only going to connect while away for limited browsing there are lots of hotspots around if your laptop is wifi enabled all you need to do is pull up in a street and do a search for an open hotspot, if you can't find one there just drive on another five hundred yards and serch again, as long as the wifi connection is unsecured you will be able to connect to the internet and your emails.

Also lots of pubs now have wifi and McDonalds resturants have them you can purchase browsing time over the internet at BT Openzone and connect that way.
