Molybdenum Disulphide Grease for Al-Ko hitchlock - What??

I was checking on the Al-ko site as I have the dreaded squeak when cornering to see how easy it is to change the pads and they mention using this grease for lubricating the cams to allow easier application of uncoupling. Anyone know in plane English what this grease is? Is it a special grease or just some fancy name for something that we may all have in our garage anyway?

Cheers

Hi

My advice would be to get the proper stuff. Without getting to technical Moly-sulfide does not drive out and is often used for exposed lubrication. The ordinary grease you may have in your garage will over a year dry out to a solid lump and loose its pliability. You could use ordinary grease but it would mean scraping of the old and re-greasing at least annualy.Moly-sulfide is often very dark in colour as opposed to regular grease which is of course a light almost transparent colour.

By the way i'm sure you are aware that the tow ball and associated matting face of the al-ko should not be greased.

Hope this helps

Molybdenum disulphide grease clings very well to metal, even when subjected to high pressure, has good low-friction properties and is resistant to washing out, all very desirable properties for this particular application. If you use anything else (graphite grease is perhaps an alternative) check the label for these features.

Thanks Martyn, Lutz

Assume I can get this from Halfords or caravan dealers ? Any other bits on the van that I can lubricate myself with this particular grease? (first van - new user)

Cheers

Hi Again

Yes you should be able to pick it up easily. Dont let the name fool you into thinking its something unusual, its not, its just that some people/compannies seem to get of on making things more complicated than they need be. If you look under the van there should be signs of were grease is already applied, brake lincages jacks etc an extra smear is never in the way.

I'm also new to caravaning - great isnt it

Regards Martyn
