Mondeo tdci clutch

Hi all, I have a 2006 Mondeo tdci with 62,000 on the clock. At the start of our holiday I towed 310 miles and had to have several attempts at reversing on the pitch. Nothing severe, but there was a smell of a burning clutch when I switched the engine off. Over the next two weeks I drove 1000 miles solo and 420 towing. Everything has been fine except for the occasional slight judder of the clutch when fully depressed. The garage is going to take a look but I suspect this will be a £1000+ job. Anybody had a similar experience? Best wishes, Butler

Hi Butler.
I too had an 06 2.2tdci but i cant say i ever had any burning smells from the clutch.
I must agree though that it can be a costly experience if it needs replacing.
I believe that you can purchase a kit for about £3-400 which may be an option.
Im sure someone else here will have more information about this.

I have a 52 plate Mondeo tdci and my clutch went when I changed gear one day whilst on the motorway (not towing). At that time, May 09, I had 60,000 miles on the clock and a new clutch cost me £650. When taken apart it looked like bits of burnt toast.
Hope this will cheer you up no end!

Hi, Thanks for those comments. I guess my question is why the clutch has not deteriorated in the subsequent 1500 or so miles? In any event I'll let you know the outcome. Best wishes, Butler

I have a 58 plate Mondeo and everytime I reversed onto a pitch I too had the similar burning smell coming from the clutch. It got so bad that I invested in a mover for the van (not the only reason as access to my storage pitch at the time was quite difficult). The smell went after a day or so and I haven't had any lasting problems with the clutch.

this "burning "smell on reversing manouvers with the van is not uncommon with cars fitted with this type of clutch there have been many posts,I have also had this prob with my Citroen, I now do not use the car to try to reverse on to the pitch.Fortunatly I have a mover fitted. I should hold up on haveing the clutch replaced until you are absolutly sure it is Knaxxxrd
PS I have used the car & towed many thousands of miles since the burning clutch prob with no further trouble

Once again, thanks for those reassuring comments. At the moment I'm waiting for the garage to get in touch. However, the car felt really good this morning so I'll be reluctant to go ahead with any major work at the moment, especially as it will be a significant sum of money. I would also say that a caravan mover would be high on my list of desirables. Being able to place the 'van exactly where you want it is a big advantage and could also avoid a crocked back. Best wishes, Butler

before you spend any money, do a search on here for Mondeo + clutch, many many of us have had problems with smelly clutches after reversing on to pitches, it's a common fault with a dual mass fly wheel, stinks a bit but no lasting problems, takes about 3 days for the smell to go away though. Never had any smoke, which I think is the difference between clutch problems and a common issue with the clutch

Thanks for that Maginnis. Just had a phone call from the garage and the mechanic said he can't justify me spending any money. He said he has known slight judder like mine to actually sort itself out. Nice to have a decent outcome. Let's hope it lasts. Thanks for all your really helpful and informative comments. Butler

One of the first signs that the Mondeo tdci clutch is on its way out is that it becomes hard to start because debris from the clutch starts to clog the flywheel starter ring.

While i have never had a burning clutch smell reversing, i have with two different cars setting off uphill.
The first was a petrol primera, followed by a audi quattro petrol, on both occasions the clutch recovered.
The clutch plate is designed to wear so i would assume that the plate life as a result would be shorter.
