Mont Blanc

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me if there are any really good campsites near Mont Blanc. I don't mind about an hours drive to get there. But it must be flat, no driving on mountains with huge drops. Must have pool and possibly slides and good for little kids. age 9.

Just about everywhere within an hour of Mont Blanc is mountainous. We stayed, several years ago, at La Coin Tranquille, at Les Abrets, and from there drove to Mont Blanc (perhaps a more like two hours, rather than an hour though) but the campsite is flat, good sized hedged pitches, excellent shower blocks and a good restaurant, well used by the locals. It has a pool, but no slides.

Nearest town to Mont Blanc on the French side is Chamonix. There are a few parks here but i dont know about pools and slides etc as this is really a winter resort although there is plenty to see in summer too.

We were there last summer and camped at the Mer de Glace site which we thought was very good but not geared up for kids.

If you dont like heights Chamonix may not be the place for you as almost everything involves cable cars. The Aguille de Midi is a cheek clenching circa 13000 ft rise in something like 8 minutes and rises almost vertically up th face of Mont Blanc. When at the top you can feel quite breathless due to the altitude.

After a few days in Chamonix we moved to the South shores of Lake Geneva near Yvoire. This site was not geared up for kids either but the area is flatter and close to your driving time of Mont Blanc.

hope it's not too late. Chamonix is, as has been said up a mountain, but the roads there are all great - motorways etc. Lake Annecy is only about an hour away. there are loads of campsites there and masses of stuff for the kids. we stayed at europa in St Jorioz which has a magic pool for the kids and did day trips to Chamonix.
