We are thinking of going to morcombe bay in a few weeks time - been to blackpool but didn't like all the drunks walking about in the middle of the day (not good when you have young children),does anyone know of any good sites with lots of things to do for smallish children 6 and 10 years, swimming pool would be a bonus. Thanks

Lorraine, i would really and strongly advice you against visiting morcambe it is a disgracefull and filthy place. it used to be quite nice but is now very much run down and has nothing to offer the visiter other than the eric morcambe statue. the out door pool has gone the pleasure park has gone most of the sea front shops are boarded up and youthes seem to hang around every corner. i wont mention the sites name as it is not fair on the owner but we had to have a police escort off site after being threatened with our van being set alight simply becouse i asked a youth who had let his dog pee up my awning to not do it again. seems this youth was off the local councill estate and the site owner had found it easier to let him and his gang use the site facilities rather than have constant battles with them. if you do want to take the chance then definately do not stay on the site next to heysham power station it is probably the worst site i have ever visited, filthy and very poorly run. (site name withheld as we are not allowed to name and shame on here sorry).

I have to agree with Icemaker. Morcambe is one of the worst towns I have visited in all the years I have been caravanning.

Very dirty and rundown. Booked to stay for a long weekend and came away after one night. Moved to the c.c. site Meathop Fell at Grange over sands. This was lovely. Morcambe never again!!!

Have to agree, I think the site that we are not allowed to mention the name of must be the same one that myself and my family visited a couple of years ago, we drove on, drove around and drove straight back out again. I have never seen such a terrible, run down, dirty site ever. Keep away from this area, there are so many other really nice areas to choose from. We ended up in Grange over Sands on the edge of the lakes.

Hi Lorraine

Although I've never caravanned there I agree with other opinions expressed about Morecambe.

The area north of Morecambe around Silverdale is lovely if you like unspoilt countryside. Holgates, already mentioned is in the same area but VERY EXPENSIVE. I've not stayed there although I did look recently!!

A much cheaper alternative in this area is Gilbratar farm near Silverdale. This is quite a basic farm site but lovely sea view. The toilets are clean and adequate and the Steward friendly and helpful. He organises special events in a big marquee some weekends. There are loads of places for kids to play including the sites own woods with tree swings, beach (a bit muddy and beware of the tides) and caves to explore. This is NOT a commercialised site or area in any way, shape or form.

It is, also, possible to visit the Lakes by car for the day. Carnforth is a short drive away and has a wider range of shops, including a brilliant secondhand bookshop, the re-vamped railway station, with displays about the film "Brief Encounters" which was filmed there, and 2 larger supermarkets.

There are lots of lovely walks nearby. Silverdale village has a small supermarket, 2 or 3 pubs and a few other shops. Nearby Arnside has some interesting shops lovely views and walks and a super chippy. See here for reviews praising the site. (Mine has yet to be posted but I agree with all the positive comments)

Hope you find a site to suit you. Incidentally the above website's campsite search facility is brilliant for finding campsites and has personal reviews from people who've visited them.

Have a good holiday

Tim
