More Speakers For My Van ?????????

Hi All,

I have a Ace Award Nightstar 2008 it has a good stero fitted as standard but only comes with two speakers, my question is does anyone know if it has the wiring already in place to add two extra speakers to the rear of the van, it is a twin dinette van and sometimes I spend time at the rear of the van and would like to direct the radio to there as not to disturb anyone watching tv at the front.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Hi Ian,

I'm afraid I can't help with the Nightstar specifically, but the radios in vans are always standard car radios with an output socket that has the capacity to drive at least four speakers (Front pair & Rear pair). The manual should have the wiring colours.

My wife has no interest in the sports commentaries that I like to listen to - they disturb her concentration on crosswords. So, on each of our last two vans (one Bailey, one Compass) I used the rear speaker connections from the radios (which hadn't been used by the manufacturer as they only provided two speakers) to link to a headphone socket I installed. It was a pretty easy connection to make in each case. Then I just fade the radio output to only use the rear speakers and hey presto I can listen without disturbing Sue.

Cheers

Hi Mike A,

That is exactly why I want to install the speakers in the rear of the van, did you find that the wiring was already there or did you have to feed it form the back of the head unit yourself, did you also go for a good quality wire considering the length it needs to travel.

Many Thanks For Your Reply,

Hi Ian,

No, the wiring was not there already. I went to my local Maplins and asked them to recommend a speaker cable for the purpose and they provided me with some pretty ordinary looking stuff. They wanted to know the run length and what speakers I wanted to hang on the end of it. Because it was only for headphones and primarily for speech radio they saw no need for anything special. The resultant quality is fine for my purposes.

I just sited the headphone socket in a convenient, but discreet, place near where I usually sit in the van and ran the cable back to the radio. In the Bailey this run was all in plastic trunking underneath the lockers that was already there; in the Compass there were some sections where I had to superglue it into the angle of the inside of the lockers.

The most fiddlesome thing was prising the multi-plug apart at the radio and connecting the cables into the appropriate parts of the plug. But overall an easy job for a competant DIYer.

Hope it goes well

Mike.

Mike A,

Thanks for that reply, I shall head down my local electrical shop and do the same thing, I think most of my wiring is well trunked so should not have to much trouble laying that down on top the existing cables.

Thanks again,
