More Steadies

On the end of the 4 steadies are swivel feet, well only one on my van but I have put wood under them all.

My good wife said we must get the feet.

Is this a good idea or just a waste of my hard earned cash ?

I have lost quite a few so now I use aluminium plates and leave them in the front locker.

The idea is by fitting them, they are always there, if you pitch on some soft ground, the steadies wont sink, or you can carry some wood ? i have these on mine... steadie feet

We have a set of wooden feet father inlaw made from off cuts and treated with a black creosote kind of preservative in 1978 and capped with alli sheet.

We had various sets of feet that have split or fallen apart.

The old 9" square hard wood and ply jobs are far better on soft ground or gravel and still in good order. If and when they are past it I think my wife will have them framed

When you fit the plastic 'feet' make sure you fit them the correct way around,the pivot will be either off centre or one end should be weighted so that when fitted they hang down at the back and not the front.That way they do not get ripped off by speed bumps or more likely the loading ramps on ferries.

That is a very good idea.

We use rectangular pieces of aluminium foot plate from the scrap yard.

I fit a section of foam pipe wrap wrapped in gaffa tape inside the leg loop(lighter type) and this stops the plates flapping about etc

If you fit the Reich type pads, put some form of retainer on the smaller end of the cross pin once you have assembled to the steady leg. I lost several of the pads before i realised that the cross pin could, somehow, get shaken out.

The rings from old key rings work quite well, but are a bit of a fiddle to threadd through. Some plastic covered single strand wire would be just as good

Screw som SS screws through the plastic pin to secure it.

I lost two pads before I was given this advice.

As "the Plotter" posted in a previous reply, make sure the feet are fitted correctly. They should click into place when on right. I have a set of feet on my caravan which have also been on my previous 2 'vans too, never lost one yet. That's blown it, I'm probably going to lose one the next time I take the 'van out on the road.
