Not sure whether this is the right section for my request. However here goes. A friend of mine has a 2 year old low milage long wheelbase twin axle Transit van in good condition. He has asked me if I know of any firm who offer a design service for suggested layouts for converting to a motor home. Also where could he purchase the necessary bits and pieces. He is a carpenter by trade and intends to do the work himself and have the gas and electricity installed by competant qualified tradesmen. Any help would be very much appreciated.

hi colin
bit tired to go into much detail just now will write again a bit later however just for starters get him to look at a few van conversions to get some ideas first this will give a good inication of where stuff goes like windows cooker ect as these will have to be piped in before the van isinsulated and panelled out most items can be sorced on the net from van converters mail order. it is a big job though mate it took me 8 months over the winter to renew the one we had and all the equipment was allready installed.

Suggest he buys a copy of MMM magazine. It is the best motorhome magazine on the market and has lots of adverts from Companies offering either a bespoke service, or conversions from stock. There are also often articles from people who have done their own 'home conversions' and explain many of the pitfalls, including getting insurance etc. John Wickersham is one f the 'experts' having built several motorhomes from the chassis up. I think he also has a book on the subject out there. Your friend should also get a copy of the Reimo catalogue as this will give ideas and has a complete stock of what he may need. Although Reimo tend to stick to VW conversions they also do much larger vans as well.

Good luck to your friend, I still have thoughts about a long wheelbase Merc conversion, but cash and reluctant wife are holding me back.

We do some basic conversions to VW vans. Nice wheels, skirts n spoilers, respray and insulation + seating come 'rock n roll' bed.
I would start with some of the specific websites
www.campervanconversion.co.uk/
http://www.convertyourvan.co.uk/fordtransitcamperconversion.html
http://www.jollyinteresting.co.uk/camper2/camper2.html
http://www.motorhomeplanet.co.uk/archives/540
An internet search for campervan or motorhome conversions will find all the info you need and more, you can also get plenty of ideas from sites such as Youtube, Flickr or other photo sites and there ar quite a few blog and web sites of owners individual projects.

ps Ebay search will find you beds and other conversion gear new or used for build projects.
