Help

can any one tell me if on a twin axle caravan Bailey Senator Montana a power touch motor mover should be fitted infront of the front wheel or behind the rear wheel for best results.secondly has any one experienced fitting two motor movers one infront of the front wheel and one behind the rear wheel because the caravan will not turn properly.

Hello Jean,

Twin axle caravans as I am sure you know are difficult beasts to turn. The motor mover manufactures produce specific models for twin axle set ups, and if by some chance you do not have the right model fitted than it will struggle and probably fail to turn the van.

Equally the mover must be adjusted correctly to make proper contact with the wheels, and that also means that the tyres must be inflated correctly as well.

So, do you have the right model fitted and adusted correctly?

Check with your fitter or contact the manufacture for advice.

Thank you John for your reply.

the reason for my questions was .Today we had a heavy duty single axle motor mover upgraded by powerwheel to a twin axle the one they recommend for behind the rear axle.on turning the caravan turns approx two feet and stops either way.the fitter was not happy with this and the recommendation was that we had another mover fitted on the front wheels.making two movers which we were assured would then turn the van easily. as we have never seen a van fitted with two movers hence my question if any one had experence of this.Plus most movers we have seen have been fitted infront of the front wheel ours has been fitted on the back and we did wonder if this could be the problem.

Jean, I have one of these fitted to a 1800kg bailey and it turns tha van. Its not a smooth turn because of the twin axle but it does not stop after 2 feet.

Do you have a 110 amp battery? I ask because a smaller one may struggle

Hello again Jean,

What you have described just does not sound right. There is very clearly a problem, and I am at a significant disadvantage in that I cannot see the parts involved. I must point out that I have no connection with PowerTouch.

If you have read any of the threads about caravan movers on this forum, you cannot help but notice that PowerTouch are consistently praised for their products, fitting and after sales services.

With this in mind, I cannot believe that you are having such trouble, and I cannot conceive why you are being told that you need two movers. The cost and additional weight, and the current drain on the battery would be unreasonable. This just does not sound right - in fact it is very wrong and my suspicions are raised.

Technically there are only a limited number of things that could be causing the symptoms you describe. These are basically :-

Hi Jean,

I can't vouch for fitting positions of your type of mover. I do however have a truma te mover on a swift conquerer fitted in front of the axle and this set up works well 95% of the time with an occasional light push required to assist. The ideal position as explained to me is behind the axle as this will allow to unload the front wheels by winding up the jockey wheel thereby placing more weight on the driven wheels.

Hope these ramblings were of some use

Jean,

It certainly does sound like you've got a problem with the powr mover that is currently fitted, talk to powr movers themselves I'm sure that they'll help.

From what I recall of the demo's I've seen with the powr mover, on twin axles models they should be fitted behind the rear wheels. Just been on powr touch's web site, the correct model for twin axle units is the Powrtouch twin model 4, and it should be fitted BEHIND the rear wheels so that it drives them.

in the meantime try this to see if it works any better, because you've got the resistance of four wheels to over come when you want to turn the van, try winding your jockey wheel down as far as it can go so that you lift the front axle, and consequently the front pair of whells, in all probability you wont get the front wheels clear of the ground, but you will certainly lessen their rolling resistance, and so the van shoul turn more easily.

Oh & by the way, change your jockey wheel for a pneumatic one, as you will find the van will manouver better than with the solid wheel fitted as standard, it wont dig into gravel of a soft surface.

Hope this helps

Hi Guys

Thankyou so much for all your suggestions you have been a great help.this weekend we are going to try everything that has been suggested .Yes we do have a 110 battery.the mover came from powerwheel they also sent the fitter.the fitter rang powerwheel himself and the girl spoke to powertouch tech dept and then rang me and told me they recommended the second mover making it a fourwheel drive. We are waiting for a phone call from them concerning this.as we do not want to put another mover on if possible as apart from all the extra expense we are worried about weight and draining the battery as we have had to remove the spare wheel carrier for them to fit the mover so the spare wheel is now extra weight in the front and nowhere in their adverts do they say you need two motor movers. we are not concerned about it moving slow as long as it turns. But once again thank you all for your help
