Can anyone recommend motorway services on the M6, both northbound and southbound suitable for caravanners?

We shall be joining the M6 from the A14 and then the toll road. Our first stop will be at Stafford Services, but would like recommendations for somewhere to break the rest of our journey to and from the Highlands.

Are Burton-in-Kendal Services any good? Likewise Southwaite Services, both on the M6.

Unfortunately, until Tebay gets its act together and instructs its 'attendants' to stop cars parking in the designated caravan slots and causing the chaos we and several other caravanners encountered last time we were there, we won't return again.

We always stop at Tesco, Carlisle - it's only 1/4 mile from M6 Jct 43 - open 24 hours, except Sat/Sun nights, with fuel, toilets and cafeteria.

Hi 'Meals on wheels'

I love Burton-in-Kedal services i used to over-night there alot with a [empty] coach before picking up in the Lakes , we've used it lots of times as a family too. Its like a family run road side cafe, the staff are realy nice.

I'm not 100% sure of the caravan arrangements but there always seems to be space in the coach park, [its not popular normaly with coach parties] just park away from any coaches that are in and you should get left in peace. If its the weekend the truck park will be quiet but its busy in the week.

I'm not sure what others are like on that run, i seem to remember a good services on the M74 somewhere near Abingdon, Oh yes Gretna green outlet village is good too.

Gretna Services ( Welcome Break )are the 1st services on the M74.There is a designated parking area for caravans only ( approx 10 spaces )

We drove in recently and found three HGV's there.I sought out the manager to complain. What a waste of time that was.I got an explanation that there are not enough spaces in the lorry park and after all, they have to pay to park!! He said we were more than welcome to park in the car park if we could not get in our designated space!!!! Shows what he knows about manoeuvring a caravan in a car park.

Further on towards Lockerbie there is Annandale Water services. There are parking spaces at the rear of the car park for caravans......but again it is common to find cars in these spaces. This is a good place to stop if you have a dog as there is space for it to go "walkies".

Have you worked out where you are overnighting?

The Ashes Caravan Site in the Lakes near Kendal is very good.It is adult only and is literally 5 mins off the motorway. We have used this before and had no complaints.

The CC Site at Englethwaite is only approx 10 mins off the M'way and although it has no toilet facilities it is a lovely quiet site to be on and plenty of dog walking if you are a dog owner.

Troutbeck Head CC Site is 15 mins.off the motorway down the A66 towards Keswick.......we use this on a regular basis.

If you need any other info let me know .

Many thanks for the helpful replies.

It's a strange thing that motorway matrix signs urge us to take a break, but when we get to motorway services, it appears us caravanners are not really that welcome.

i would urge caution when parking in bays that you are not suppose to park in because most of the motorway service areas car parks are not run by the service area management.it seems that they have brought in independent car parking companys to manage the parking areas and if you are parked in the wrong place, not showing a valid parking ticket you will be clamped and the release fee can be upwards of

hgv dave - we're well aware of caravanners getting tickets when parked in the wrong area because the caravan area is full of hgvs, coaches and cars.

Why are hgvs, coaches and cars exempt from tickets when they park in the caravan area?

Hi M.O.W.

On two recent trips out we have stopped at service areas on M1 (Woodall near Sheffield) and M6 at (I think) Keele. On both occasions I followed the Caravans sign only to find that I was heading back onto the motorway. There are signs but no parking that I could see. On the M6 I resorted to stopping in the empty busses area, waiting for someone to challenge me but unfortunately they didn't.They would have got a mouth-full.

Hi HGV dave , i suppose you're right with the clamping thing , i expect its easier to clamp a car than it is a HGV too.

Its a shame that motorway parking is so limited its come to this!

Thanks for the warning, i'll be careful where i park.

Possible because they go in and spend money and most caravanners don't
