Motorway Services, Use or Not to Use, that is my question

What if you were standing guard over your Caravan at Clacket Lane whilst the family answered the call of nature Lane and your house was being emptied of all your treasured family belongings in to a Luton bodied tranny ๐Ÿ™‚

Scotch Lad,

In principle what you say is very true.

However we must all remember that most caravan Insurance Policies contain very strict warranties regarding leaving the caravan unattended at places away from the home or storage. eg wheel clamps, hitchlocks alarms etc.

I just can't be bothered to fit all that up so we don't leave it unattended.

It would be foolhardy for everyone to think you can just leave the caravan unattended at the services and expect a cheque from Mr Insurer when it's stolen.

Cheers

Alan

Alan,

Agreed, but it is not all bad news. My Policy has an excess for such an occasion where the deduct

Scotch Lad

You will only enjoy deduction of your policy excess once your Insurers have accepted policy liabilty. If you have breaches a warranty or Special Policy Condition I am afraid not only will you have to pay the excess but you will receive nothing from the Insurer. Now that hurts!!

Lisa,

As for the thief's toilet we always take a pocket full of toilet tissue just in case the thief has stolen the rolls from the services bogs. LOL.

Cheers

On a separate issue, I have found that on the services I used on the M4, that if you used the designated caravan parking (shared with lorries BTW) you could not then get to a car fuel pump and if you went to fuel up first then you could not get to the parking area.

Be aware of this as I only had a 250 mile range when towing and to be forced to go to the next service station to fill up was a bit of a worry.

Alan,

You must follow what is in your Policy and I will do the same. I have re-read mine and I know exactly what it will cover, and not.

I'm retired but my wife still works. I caravan solo quite a lot and my wife either drives to join me jumps on Easy Jet or Ryan Air for our main holidays and joins me.

What am I supposed to do solo?

Car is alarmed, the caravan alarmed, tow hitch locked and wheel lock fitted when I stop. If the caravan cables are detached from the car the Alarms go off and the caravan has a GPS box of tricks that I can monitor.

I'm not going to stand lookout either.

hi all

as a hgv driver i can hazzard a guess why when you stop at services and can smell urine......its because of some idiot and lazy hgv drivers would sooner stand at the side of there lorry and urinate rather than walk onto the services building

well maybe thats one way of thinking about it but here is another side of the argument

i have stopped on services and used the toilets and i was away from my lorry a maximum of 5mins,when i got back i found that the curtains of my trailer had been slashed, although nothing had been stolen, maybe the thief had seen me walking back, who knows but i can tell you it was almost certainly another hgv driver with sticky fingers.

so that leads me to the question......would i have been lazy having a wee at the side of my lorry or would i have been thinking of the security of my load?.............well that i suppose is another argument entirely
