Mould in bathroom - help!

We have a 2004 Sterling Eccles Jewel. I checked it yesterday at the storage and found that the high level bathroom cupboards had green mould all over the top of the doors. Also there was mould down the sink cabinet. I can only assume that it is condensation as I cannot find any leaks etc. There is no electric at the storage. Can anyone suggest how we stop this? We always leave the cupboard doors open and the bathroom door open, but there is no mould anywhere else. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jackie,

A suggestion would be to make sure that the caravan is well aired before putting away in storage.

Since it only affects cabinets in the shower area - I therefore assume you use the shower when out with the caravan - and those cupboards were either damp or had collected water during use. So you might want to make sure that this area really has a chance to dry out in the future.

And on the subject of condensation - if the area is already damp and a source of water - then condensation is more likely to form, so do you leave a window or a vent cracked open to let the interior equilibrate with the outside air?

Hi Robert,

When we put it into storage there was no water or obvious damp in the cupboards and the shower was dry. Would leaving the flush tank of the toilet part filled cause more condensation? Also there is a roof vent just above the cupboards. Would you recommend leaving this slightly open and if so, would it be weathertight? I am not sure about leaving the window slightly open because of the security aspect.

Thanks Jackie

Hi Jackie,

"Would leaving the flush tank of the toilet part filled cause more condensation?"

Pretty likely I'd say - it's not sealed - there's warnings on the Thetford site about not travelling with more than 2 litres (in some models) because water can slosh out.

On a hot day, water vapour will evaporate from the tank and linger inside the caravan - and then condense that night. That could well be the reason.

"Roof vent"

As you don't have a problem in the rest of the van - I'd think about removing the mould, emptying the flush tank, and seeing how that works next year.

As to whether your roof vent can be left open - I don't know your model caravan or the style of roof vent at all, so you may want to speak with your dealer.
