Municipal Sites In France

It must be possible to tour in France, very cheaply by staying at good clean municipal sites which have the essentials,if not the swimming pools and on-site restaurants etc. I would be interested to hear of any you could recommend (or any to be avoided).By way of starting things off, my best find this year was the municipal site at Beaumont-sur-Sarthe,just over 7Euros per night and excellent facilities.

It's our favourite way of seeing France. Sites vary, of course, but most are walking distance from somewhere with shops, restaurants etc. People are friendly, they are cheap and generally you can just turn up an get a pitch (Except August, of course!). We use the CC Europe vol 1 as a "bible", since we've found the directions in particular are really good!

Pity the UK doesn't have a similar system (and at similar prices!).

hi peter yes i totally agree we have stayed on some very municipal sites one we realy like is dessay near just off the n10 near futurscope clean site in the village lovley river walk all the best peter

There are some very good, basic non municipal sites as well. We stopped in one 20 miles out from Beaune called "Camping Le Vert Auxois" (http://www.caravancampingsites.co.uk/france/21/vertauxois.htm), it cost us a little over E30 for 4 adults with electric for 2 nights!

Plan an inland route and even during "Les grands vacances" one should find room at the simple Municipales. By the last week in August, "Le retour" has emptied the sites and some are closing!

If you are in Alsace try Camping des Trois Chateaux. Eguisheim. Tel 03 89 23 19 39 We paid 22.70 Euros per night - four people with electric. Views from some pitches of castles and vinyards. Eguisheim village very Hansel and Gretel. Some pitches awkward to get onto - a motor mover came in handy - and the toilet blocks do not have toilet seats so a little bit of paper folding can be called for. Booking advised - the queues start building up at the start of the lunch break. Lovely area for sightseeing. Strasbourg 40 mins by train from nearby Colmar - Basle 45 mins in opposite direction ( Remember passports) Site well run - the notice "Silence Total 23 hrs - 07 hrs" means it.

Storks fly in from time to time to add to the interest.

Peter, have you tried Camping a la Ferme in France? They're a bit like our CL's, and similar money too. You can find them in any French campsite directory, or on the web. Very cheap and a taste of real France, but you will need your own facilites on board your van, and it helps to speak some French.

One of the best municipal sites we have stayed on is in Chinon in the Loire. We stayed 4 nights last week and were very impressed. The showers were excellent and the site is well run with a magnificent floral entrance. An added bonus is the view as its on the banks of the Vienne and overlooked by the chateau. We shall be returning,and all this for just over 10 euros a night!

The municipal site at Chatillon sur Seine is very good - and a lovely walk down through a wooded hillside into town. It's clean, good size pitches, easy to get into, and enough showers. The municipal at Coullons in the Loire (near to Gien) is good too, with a good central wash block. Another good and cheap site (not municipal, though) is Les Grebese at Marcenay le Lac in Burgundy, cheap, friendly, and with a very pleasant reception area.
