They have just told me that to prevent fraud I am not allowed to withdraw more than £50.00 on any day at an ATM in France, so as to prevent fraud.

I quite honestly do not believe them.

They did say that I should also use traveller's cheques, which I am very reluctant to do, or go to a bank showing a Visa sign and make a withdrawal there.

As I told the guy on the helpline, I was in France last October and had no problems whatsoever!

Does anyone here have more recent experience than mine?

What rubbish, sister and I had no problems in France and Italy three weeks ago. I also drew plenty of cash on two cards in Barcelona over the GP weekend.

You fail to mention which bank you are talking about,as some may well advise you to keep the amount drawn smalll.

We use nationwide as they do not charge abroad and have always given an excellent exchange rate...

Hi

I work for Barclays, albeit no longer in retail banking. It is possible to put a holiday "flag" on your card prior to your leaving and that way the bank is on notice that you are going overseas. They will also give you a direct international number to the fraud prevention dept to call in case of hiccups. I am aware that certain outlets abroad are asked to refer the transaction due to its unusual nature so that the cardholder can be verified, but the retailer taken the easy option of declining.

I'm with Firstdirect and have just come back from France. I had no problems at all BUT I did call them twice in the days before I left and explained that I would be in France and that they shouldn't put a stop on my cards while I was there. Even then, they didn't promise it wouldn't happen as it seems it was all down to their fraud department and whether they would read the comment they put on my account.

Worked anyway...

Just back from Spain, some ATM's were allowing only up to 200 euros, some 300.

Brother In Law was advised to take Travellers Cheques and couldn't get anyone to change them, caused him lots of hassles.

I told my bank how long I was to be away and where and they made sure that there were no problems drawing cash, Alliance and Leicester.
