My Towcar not good enough for site..

Firstly I would like to say hello to all as a long time reader and first time poster on here. I have recently decided to get back into caravanning and brought a 2004 Lunar fixed bed. Now i thought that I would try a local site to me in Marden first as they had a fairly impressive advert, i turned up to a very rude gentleman to quite promptly told me he didn't want my car in his site as it was too "commercial" and I would need to leave it outside. I have never been so insulted and demanded a refund and quite promptly left. I do not have the space or need to run a car for both work and pleasure so I brought a vehicle that could satisfy both a while back. I drive an Australian import Ford Falcon ute 4.0 straight six dedicated LPG vehcile. I find it an excellent towcar with superb running costs, i think this is a very attractive looking vehicle and cant see where the problem is.. its not like it was a dirty old van or builders pickup. I use it for the delivery of computers so it is always very clean and well looked after.

For those of you who dont know what one looks like I have found a very similar model to mine here - http://us1.webpublications.com.au/static/images/articles/i1016/101645_00mg.jpg

For me its the ideal vehicle, i can seat 3 people, its a very quiet fast comfortable drive and it can tow anything you feel like hitching to it.

Is this problem something I am likely to run into on other sites or was this chap just being snobby because I dont drive a nice shiny Range Rover for about £50,000?

Kind Regards

I can't see you vehicle being a problem, PC are running a Mitsu L200 pickup at the moment. I think you just run into an a...hole at that site so shouldn't have probs in the future.

Might help taking the hat with corks off next time ;O)

Perhaps the owner didn't like the Lunar fixed bed, and was too embarrassed to say so, so picked on you're car instead? It's not for me to say, but those Lunars do attract the rebel type......

Nice looking machine, what is under the bonnet and what is the output.

The picture looks very low so was wondering how it tows.

Did you have any problems getting the towbar. We thought about getting an L200 last year but decided against it, but if Ford released this machine in a crew cab with auto I would definatley be interested.

might take the corked hat off next time yes! haha

Well the one pictured is the base model which i have. Mine is called the E-GAS model which is most unusual overe here at it starts and runs solely off LPG gas.. which means i can get around 350 - 400 miles between refills.

It is a 4.0 Litre engine in straight six form.. BHP is not high at around 200 ish.. but the torque is superb at around 375. It is an automatic column shift and drive likes a big car.. not not until you look over your shoulder and see the load bed you realise you're in a pickup!

I think they do a double cab version but they are hard to find. Didnt have any problems with the towba fitting as it came with one from factory! Most parts can be ordered with about a week delivery from australia if they are not stocked over here. It looks low but it is actually quite a long and wide motor (longer than the mondeo estate) so its higher than it looks.. and the soft springs make soft roading no problems.

Some sites don't like signwritten vans. Others say no commercial vehicles at all - one of our party was in a Land Rover defender without rear windows and was asked to remove it. But had it had rear windows and bench seats, that would have been fine. Mad site owner.

Well mate I have a dirty old van that pulls the box and a 530 bmw for running around and have never had a problem. Tell him to stuff it where the sun dont shine as you did and find someone else to take your hard earned money..... I to have a Lunar lexonEB and think its a great bit of kit :)

Hi Marcus,

It's not on mate you must have felt pretty mad! - ever thought of Joining a club like the the C&CC or the CC though? Their sites would never turn anybody away without a good reason and they are generally cheaper than commercial sites.

The forestry commision sites are good too, certainly no vehicle or any other snobbery with them.

Sorry David

I have to disagree with your comment about CC clubs, We turned up at one CC site we had booked in advance to be told we could stop on the site, but the transit van we arrived in had to be parked off site.

I really must admit to being a bit of a snob here, i too dislike commercial vehicles like transits on site, if i ran a quality site i too would insist on their removal.

I dont however think that your looks out of place, looking at the picture it looks like a nice motor. perhaps this is a little extreme.

I just dislike the whole rusty transit scenario. i accept that its all some people can afford but thats not really my problem and why should it spoil my view.

What vehicle do you use for towing? and what type of caravan do you have?

I hope neither the tow car nor the caravan is over five years of age, now that would spoil MY view.
