Bought in a N plate Disco 2.0 petrol MPI as a PX, 7 seats with 70k on the clock ,very clean ,no dents or rust, with full history and 10 mths mot. My question is , at this mileage is it due any major work? I can buy it for £1600 which is less than half its retail price so its a good deal and have no intention of towing with it, just getting as a "toy" No nead for pro ,anti 4x4 debate, thanks Brian.

Check the timing belt and the rear floor under the carpet (by the back door). Also look at the chassie to check for rust.

If all is OK, then have a look at http://www.discoveryownersclub.org they have a forum and a non members section that allows you to post questions

The 2L MPi was made primarily for the Company Car market where it fitted under the 1999cc Company car tax band. More popular in other EU countries than here.

It is not a bad vehicle but not reckoned to be much good for any serious stuff - towing or anything else. But economy is reasonable and the engine suffers from few problems.

Check Low range & Dif Lock selection as these are often rarely used on an MPi and selection mechanism can stick. Easy to fix with a can of WD40 but the centre consol has to come out to do it. Not a problem at all - any "anorak" LR website will have reference on how to do it.

The Italians loved them as the fitted well into the Italian Tax system - but they also fitted Turbo's to them which made them fly!

Only thing I would definitely check is the transmission slack - If you get a loud bang when taking your foot off then putting it back on the power again - beware! - This is an expensive problem to fix and is most often caused by lack of maintenance.

Said to be more of a problem on this model as it is not one the enthusiasts favour.

Other "lack on mantenance" points - The front swivels Leaking? or no oil at all? - Dif's - any oil in them?.

Thanks guys, drove the car today ,just like new,no rattles ,squeeks or knocking in ALL gears. On the ramp no signs of wear or rust. The book shows full history BUT no evidence of a cambelt change and visable signs that the head gasket has been changed for a "3 layer metal one" (mechanics words !) . Have decided not to buy for me as it is actually too good for what I want and also not too keen on petrol. Might buy to sell on though as it really is very clean . Checking out ex MOD / tax exempt LR's for a real toy. Brian.
