We are planning to go over to France end of Sept and spend about a month, travelling down into Italy. I have some guide books etc and will check websites in advance to see what the places are like, but I want to be versatile depending on weather etc. Camping in the past we have always found somewhere even in peak season, but am I asking for trouble with a caravan if I just turn up? My experience with both campsites and hotels is not to leave it too late in the day to start looking for somewhere.

I have never booked, but if possible I try to arrive at the campsite by about 5pm and never had any problems.

Do your homework before you go. Whilst you shouldn't need to book a site make sure that it is actually open. Many sites in France close round about 15th September. The CC "Caravan Europe" book is a good source of this info.
Last year we had quite a job in the Dordogne (Sarlat to be exact) in finding a site open towards the end of September.
Any sites open should be fairly quiet but facilities may be more limited. It also gets dark so much earlier. Other than that, it is a nice time to go.

Why not buy yourself some Camping Cheques which will achieve two things?
Firstly you can use them to pay for the time you spend on one of their ( usually ) excellent, good value sites and secondly, they will provide you with a directory of their sites throughout Europe and a map.
The directory will then indicate the dates upon which the sites operate which will help with the point raised by John M and like Lutz, we also spend September and October in France and apart from the first and last two nights of the trip, never book.

You usually find that site empty out Sept October and there is plenty of space. A good book to invest in is the Camping Card ACSI which enables you to book onto sites for just 14E a night. The initial book with information in costs about
Make sure sites are open - agree no need to book - phone early in morning if you are worried but you could be the only people on site as the French have all gone home as they only camp in July/August except for the Motorhomers who don't use sites anyway
