Hi all on forum, i'm new to caravaning and doing the obligatory research on which van to buy. My tow car will be a Range Rover Sports TDV8, and the van will be an off road type. These vans usually range between 2.2 - 2.8 tonne fully laden. The RRS are rated at 3.5t. I'd be keen to hear comments from similar.

Hello Aussie Mark, welcome to the world of caravanning.

Not sure what you mean by an "off road caravan" and the weights you quote, particularly the upper end is likely to be too heavy for a Range Rover Sport to tow sdafely.

You need to check the kerbweight of your RRS to determine what the maximum weight of the caravan can be towed which should not exceed 100% of the tow vehicles kerbweight. Additionally the caravan should not be wider than 2.3m.

Remember also that if you passed your UK driving test after 1st January 1997 there are restrictions on the combined weight of the outfit that should not exceed 3.5tons unless you take an additional driving test to obtain a B&E licence.

If in doubt put a call out on the forum for cris or Lutz, both have a more detailed knowledge of the laws related to weights and towing restrictions. Mal

Hi Mal,

Thanks for the reply. An "off road" caravan is a van that can virtually go anywhere. The better and more sturdy vans have been taken to the "Top End" (very top of Queensland) or to "The Red Centre" (Ayres Rock). The vans are fully waterproof up to approx. 700mls, and fully dust proof. They are built very very strong and can be towed through sand, over gravel roads, through river crossings and over rocky roads.

Have a look at www.bushtracker.com.au - all will be evident!

Because of the sturdy build the vans are heavier than the norm.

regards Mark
