New BP Gas Cylinders?

Can anyone advise me correctly, please? Whilst on holiday (as you do) I got chatting with a 'vanner nearby. Eventually, the chat got around to the new BP gas cylinders. During the conversation he informed me that you: "Obtained the gas cylinder from Truma and, when empty, refilled it at your local petrol station!". I thought initially he was crackers, and I even checked the date (it was not the 13th!!!). Surely there cannot be any truth in this. Or do I look a bit gullible after taking the sun!!! I look forward to hearing Forum members comments.

Here is what I know.....

The BP gas light 5Kg bottles are available through Truma appointed dealers and the 10Kg bottles are available through both Truma and some BP retail outlets which may include BP Petrol stations. BUT the bottles are not filled there they only do exchange. I have a 5Kg Bottle for camping and the dealer network is expanding all the time and could be available easily all over the country shortly. The bottles are very light and the difference is great if you have to carry the bottle at all.

if you intend to use these cylinders and you have a newish caravan with a built in regulator you will require an adaptor that fits on the butane hose pigtail the part No is 51.4.190.0002pk which can be bought from Miriad products L T D tel 01283 586060 this company is a subsidary of Truma . if you have an older caravan which uses a standard regulator you are ok as a new regulator comes with your first new cylinder

We recently changed from Flogas and Calor Gas to BP. The new plastic BP Gas Light fits in our tourer nicely and we've noticed a big difference in the nose weight. It was expensive -

Cranham Caravans in Essex (junc 29 off M25) is doing a free container swap for a BP from Calor - all you do is pay for the gas (refill prices). You also get a BP receipt saying that you paid for the cycliner so you can get your 50% deposit back. Who says 50% of nothing is nothing - I make it

Can anyone please advise whether these new cylinders are OK for a Cadac ? I presently use Calor butane (blue) but I believe the new BP Gas is propane. Will it be safe connnected to the Cadac ?

Have you checked the data plate on the Cadac?, it should tell you what gasses are suitable.

Some BBQs use Butane gas straight from the bottle, without a regulator. These will not be safe with propane as the propane vapur pressure is much greater. However, if the BBQ states Butane at 27mB pressure, then it will almost certainly be happy with propane at 37mB pressure, it just need the correct regulator for the bottle.

As with any gas appliance, if you are not sure about anything you must refer it to a competent fitter.

Getting back to the original question, it quite clearly states on the bp gaslight web site that you can NOT refill the bottles at a petrol station yourself as the nozzle is of a different size to prevent this. they seem a bit of a waste of time to me they may be half the weight of an empty calor cylinder but half of not a lot is not worth the hassle.
