I have the opportunity of having the new Mazda 6 2.00 diesel as a company car,but I am now worried having read the latest P.C mag which features an article on this car.

I have a coachman Amara 520/4,max weight when loaded is 1400kgs.It now looks like this car will be no good.I have been caravanning for approx 26 years and am an ex class 1 driver so feels comfortable towing at 100%.

My other choices are a Passat 1.9 diesel or a Mazda 5 2.00 diesel( I would be taxed a lot more on this one ).

Your comments would be greatly appreciated on this one.

Don`t know how much the Mazda weighs, but don`t go for the Passat unless you can get a 2.0 TDI.

The 1.9 is a bit of a slug and noisy with it, only having 105bhp.

If its heavy enough, get the 6.

A difficult decision but one that must be made soon

Assuming there are no weight/loading issues I`d probably go:-

Mazda 6

Zafira

Toyota

Passat

Mazda 5

It` s not that I`m anti Passat (I`m on my third, a TDI 140 Sport Estate) it`s just that the engine you`re looking at isn`t particularly nice. It will get you there (probably easier to get off the line than the 140) but not very quickly.

The Mazda looks nice and has a strong engine, Zafira is versatile with a decent engine, but I really don`t like the Toyota, and I`d check its towing limits.

We have a Zafira 1.9 cdti and it's a lovely solo drive. The large boot space and fold flat 3rd row of seats are very practical. The 6th & 7th seats are only really suitable for kids for any distance but adults can use them at a push. Ours is the 150 bhp version which has a kerbweight of 1653kg and is a near perfect match at 84% for our Geist AK495 with a MTPLM of 1390 KG. Can't really comment too much on towing ability as we're new to this and have nothing to compare to but it seems to be ok.

Thanks all,

Just to give you an update.I have tried various websites to get the kerbside weight for the new Mazda 6 but to no avail.

Went to my local Mazda dealer on Saturday lunchtime to get a brochure but guess what. The salesman said that he had a big pile that morning but they were all gone.He took my phone number and said he would contact Mazda on Monday and he would ring me with the answer. No phone call.

Today managed to get the number for Mazda U.K ,rang them at 12.15 lunchtime today, still awaiting an answer.

Frustrating or what !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Pat

Published kerb weights can only be guideline figure. This is for two reasons

Firstly, whilst the car manufacture will be trying to control the manufacturing process closely, inevitably there will be some variations in the weights of the components they use and cumulatively it can add up to tens of Kg at the end of the productions line.

Consider the paint finish; some paints are loaded with metallic particles and this can make a difference of over 5Kg per car.

Also importers and garages will sometimes fit extras to meet local regulations and these will be part of the kerb weight.

So KbWt is specific to each vehicle. The only way of being sure is to take the car to a weighbridge and get weighed.

However it is reasonable to use a published figure (if you can find one) for assessing the likely towing ratio.

With regard to the Zafira. My sources suggest that there are three 1.9 diesel models in the MK2 guise.

CDTi 120PS Manual BP which is only rated to tow 1300Kg

CDTi 120 PSAuto which is rated for 1400Kg and the

CDTi 150PS20 which is rated for 1500Kg

Check carefully that you are not going to exceed the maximum tow weight for the vehicle of your choice.

Always check specification data with your handbook, dealer or manufacture. - do not rely on third part sites such as this.

I am still trying to get hold of a brochure, but to no avail. However Mazda U.K phoned me today and said that the kerbside weight of the new Mazda 6 2.00ltr dieselis 1530kgs.

If that is correct, it means that it will pull my coachman Amara 520/4.

The only worry I have is even if I get a new car in April will a towbar be available for my holiday to Switzerland in June.??

I have a mazda 6 brochure in my hand and the diesel 5 door has a kerbweight of 1530 kg inc a 75 kg driver. The estate is 1545 kg inc 75kg driver. The brochure is on mazda.co.uk website.

Hi all, finally got hold of a brochure. Funny it doesn't state the max towing weight of a braked trailer.Assuming that the max towing weight as stated in the handbook on a 8% and 12% gradiant is between 1600kgs and 1800kgs,am I safe to assume that this car will safely pull 1400kgs,as a braked trailer.
