New Plastic Gas Bottles - any thoughts?

I decided to replace my calor with 5kg BP last year to reduce weight, no probs and, yes, most importantly noticeably less nose weight.

Issues with BP: the gas is propane and the convenient 5kg bottles are smaller than Calor propane therefore run out more quickly. And unfortunately BP gas distributors are few and far between - see the BP website http://www.bp.com/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9007797&contentId=7015926 and note that the 5kg bottles tend only to be available at caravan dealers and the like (mostly Truma stockists), very odd - look at BP's map.

Finding same as Alan. Very good weight saving, but stockists thin on the ground. Some caravans seem to be able to take the more widely available larger 10Kg container but we have to stick to 5Kg due to size of locker. We have ended up with 3 cylinders so we always have a spare full one at home which gives us a little longer to source refils.

Some Homebase seem to have the larger container but this doesn't help us much.

Glad to see this response. We are currently discussing whether to change our heavy older type Calor gas bottles for the newer lighter ones. It is a no brainer really, especially when we finally empty the current one.

However, did anyone read where Calor gas was having problems with the regulator(s) showing how much gas remained in the bottle. I have looked through several back copies of CC and PC mags and cannot find it. TOH says I must have dreamt it, or was having a senior moment!

Thanks Michael. An indicator wouldn't change our minds. However, it is nice to know that I am not going totally dolally!

We got a couple of BP Gaslights a couple of years ago, very light (even lighter than the calor-lite)- my five year old gransdon can lift a full one, easy to change over as they've got a clip on connector so you don't need a spanner. Easy to see how much gas is in them coz they are semi-transparent. Don't go rusty so if you need to put them in a car no red paint or rust marks. You can get 10kg ones if two 5kg isn't enough and you can change them at Homebase as well as caravan dealers (BP even deliver to your door if you pay a bit extra)

I usually use the 13Kg Calor bottles but did get a couple of CalorLite bottles for the BBQ and a reserve.

Very pleased with them indeed. They appear to weigh the same full as the old bottles when empty. I found the BP bottles too difficult to replace , when away, and I personally don't like the clip on fitting.
