New to caravanning equipment list required

Hi,

Can anyone give me a list of equipment I'll need to go with a new caravan?

I started by asking the dealer and he gave me this

aqua roll

battery

toilet fluid

hitch lock

gas bottle

waste carrier

towing mirrors

then when I got my insurance I found the soldsecure site and decided to invest in a wheel clamp aswell.

I then went on a towing course and got advised I'd need chocks and levelling blocks.

I've also read somewhere I'll need a spirit level (I assume for levelling) and a torc wrench with me (I assume this is for the wheels nuts)

Can some experienced caravanner please tell me what else I might need and why?

Hi Lynn

If your caravan is brand new a steady winder, a step and an electric hook up (ehu) lead will be supplied with the caravan but you might want to consider buying a more robust step rather than using the plastic step provided.

The two most important items are of course a kettle and a corkscrew / bottle opener.

You will need a tin opener, vegetable peeler if you plan to cook, cutlery,drinking glasses, enough crockery for those using the caravan regularly, cooking utensils and some pots and pans.

Don't forget your pillows and bedding, we have a separate lot just for caravan use.

Some people use melamine cups, plates etc and plastic glasses but if you look out for Luminarc crockery the weight difference is negligible and the 'real crockery and glasses last longer unless you drop them.

If you plan to use sites mainly with ehu a low wattage electric kettle is a good idea but we keep a whistling kettle for use on the stove when we go to rallies without ehu.

We use plastic storage boxes available from the pound shop to store tins, loose items etc in one place when on the move.

It might be worth while compiling a 'caravan list' on your computer then you can print a copy when you load the caravan for trips.It's always nice to know what you've forgotten :0)

If you plan to use an awning you will need pegs unless they are supplied, a breathable groundsheet and a hammer or mallet to knock the pegs in.

I'm sure that you will receive many other suggestions but beware of buying things that you don't really need and won't use much.

When Istarted I made up a check list of what to do when hooking up and preparing to set off.I wrote it out on cardboard and covered it with cling film to keep it dry. A bit like a pre flight check really. A bit off subject but it may be useful to keep at the back of your mind

Thanks everyone, this really helps, I like the idea of the Luminarc crockery, and will definitely look out for it as I don't have a melamine set yet.

WAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH, don't buy melamine Lynn.

It stains and scratches and is no good in microwaves.

We did have it when new to caravanning but it's all been binned ages ago.

Just a tip if you're new. Don't store anything heavy in the top cupboards, especially when towing. Last year my wife forgot to remove a pyrex bowl from the top cupboard and when we got home she opened it and crash,

Well everyone has there own list. You will probably find after your first outting

Main things i would definately not forget are

1. Main Cable

2. Corner Steady Winching Handle

3. Aqua Roll

4. Waste Roll

5. Toilet Chemicals ( Both Oink and Blue )

6. Hitch Lock

7. Gas Bottle Spanner if using Red Gas

8. Small Tools box , Screwdrivers, Adjustable spanner, torch,

fuses, pliers, Electrical tape, couple of small ty wraps

9. Length of water hose for topping up aqua roll

Thats a starter for 10 well 9 but you will add and take away as you need to.

in addition to the list i just posted i would say one of those little tri angle levels will help you level up if you dont have on fitted to the van

what do i have in the van well not much but what i have does us

this is what i have with me,

8. Small Tool Box containing Both types of screwdriver

Adjustable spanner

Spare fuses

Electrical Tape

Few Small ty wraps

Spare Plug for cascade Water heater

9. Hitch Lock

10. Gas Bottle key if using red gas

You will add and take stuff off but i think this is a good starter list

I dont go far without this in the van and seems to work for me

as others have said keep it light dont over load

i wouldnt pack it to the gunnals with food either take your laptop and find there nearest food store

if you have an onboard water tank i would empty it before you go anywhere

TV, Sky Box and Dish, DVD, Laptop and Dongle, BBQ and Deck Chairs,

In addition to things already mentioned, we never leave home without:

a good first aid kit, we also carry things like paracetamol etc for kids and adults in it

fire extinguisher

fire blanket

waterproof coats

printed details, including opening times for local supermarket with petrol station and pharmacy, we try to avoid carrying a lap top too much like work for us.

Food for meals on day of arrival and breakfast next day for long breaks or for the weekend.

Too scared to total up what all this cost .....

To all of the above 1 x Item I find really invaluable is a pair of 'short' wellingtons - when you are having to draw water across a grass pitch or take down an awning and the grass is soaking wet..............

Hi lynn

Remember to add a piece of waste hose pipe for the waste disposal bottle.

towing mirrors, security products, waste/water bottles, awning and groundsheet, step, winder, gas bottle, crockery, cutlery, bedding

and a block of wood for your caravan legs to go down on.

I pesonnally haven't required leveller blocks for a caravan.

Airer for your washing, kettle, pots and pans, toaster if required although you have grill on the oven.

small bottle for water to keep in the caravan for filling kettle, etc..

toilet chemical fluids.

torch along with a supply of fuses,etc..
