Hi.

I am very keen to buy a used caravan for holidays with my two kids aged 2 and 3. We love camping but the idea of not having to put up the tent really appeals. I've got a budget of about £2000 and I drive a Jeep Cherokee.

I don't really know where to start looking or even what I'm looking for! Can anyone give me some advice please?!

There are loads of places:

1. Try the local ads on postcards in your supermarket - usually they're put up by people who are selling up, and sometimes you'll get a real bargain, with everything you need thrown in.

2. Search for 'used caravan sales' on google - caravanfinder, and many others.

3. Your local caravan dealers.

Have a look at as many models as you can - there is such a huge variety of layouts that you really need to weigh up exactly what you need, and you can only do this by looking at as many as possible. Your children are quite small so what you need at present may not be what you need in another year or two when they've both grown a bit.

When you're looking around the worst possible thing about buying used is that the caravan may be harbouring damp problems. Usually this is indicated by a musty smell (or lots of air fresheners), and occasionally by soft wall panels, or a bumpy feel. This is a No No unless you want hours of DIY.

If you can find a genuine caravanner who has looked after his/her van well, possibly stored indoors, and will give you a pile of extras then you'll be doing well. Don't rush into a purchase, make sure it's exactly what you want - and if you have any caravanning (and sensible) friends, then ask their advice too.
