New Whale Elite Tape leaking

I'm going CRAZY. Just spent best part of £70 on a replacement Whale Elite short spout tap for my bathroom. First one had minor leak with water coming out of a hole in the base where the wires exit. Went back to the local stockist who replaced it for another one. You guessed it, this one leaks as well

. So I thought is it perhaps me? On closer inspection the water is escaping out of the gap between the spout assembly and the base of the tap top. It then runs down inside the assembly and out the base unit. For £70, these units don't appear to be good value for money.

The problem now is the large hole that I needed to make in the sink to fit the Elite tap. Hopefully another make will be compatible?

Any similar experiences???
